you are probably looking at 800-1000$ for a student and 2000-4000$ for a professional/semi-professional. a good place to look would be wwandbw.com or the international music suppliers. the IMS is VERY good and will answer ANY questions you may have.

I just bought a new bass. A Buffet Prestige low C the 1193 model. They and the equal counterparts(Selmer, Leblanc) all cost $5000 or more(selmer being closer to $6000). Now these are the top end models. The intermediate models are going to be a little less expensive. It all depends what you are looking for in a bass clarinet. If you are looking for one to play professionally on, or even to go to college with, you might be looking for one of the pro line horns above. However if yu are looking for a good student horn, I must say that the Vito plastic bass is a very nice horn for the money. it plays well, in tune and has good tone.
You can always find one online for cheaper, but make shure you can get one on a trial basis, just so you don't buy a bad horn and cant return it.
If you do buy a pro line horn, I would go with either the Selmer or Buffet bass with low C. Basically most every pro symphony player(in the US) plays a Selmer bass, Buffet less prevalent, but it is still a nice horn. Selmers cost about $1000 more than the Buffet, but the sound is great. The Buffet's have great key work, with a sound that's not quite as good as the Selmer but I still good. I would also like to say that one should go ahead and get a horn with low C(only if you plan to go pro or play in college). I say this only because though you may not need it for every piece you play, it's just nice to have it there. Also they only cost about $700 more than the low Eb bass'. So if you're spending $4200 what's the big deal with paying another 700.

If you've got the bread go for the best--a pro model Selmer or Buffet (preferably with the low C extension). Otherwise you're probably just as well off with a Vito as with any of the "intermediate" models.

Check Ebay. I got a nice used Leblanc for $1200 with which I am very happy.

If you find a good deal ($1200 or less) on an "intermediate" bass maybe considerate it. But I have never seen one with the automatic double register key or even the left hand Eb/Ab key so why pay two or three grand for a horn that's probably not going to play any better than a one thousand dollar Vito?

My teacher has a Selmer, and it's a gorgeous instrument. I've been playing a LeBlanc (old, but with low C extension) for a couple of years, and it's not too bad either. Definitely go for the low C extension if you can - it gives you that much more versatility.

I must disagree somewhat with Anna --- I've been playing b.c. for 25 years, and have rarely needed the low-C extension, a feature that adds expense, complexity, and weight. Nice on occasion and a necessity for playing "modern" classical music, but one can get by without it generally.

First off---do not, under ANY circumstances buy a Vito or Bundy (now Selmer USA). I have had many bad expiriences with these horns. I came very close to melting one of the plastic pieces of crap. However I would recommend a Buffet or Selmer (Paris--NOT USA). I have been playing for 4 years, and I use a Buffet 1180 (Eb-- no C) with a Selmer C* mpc, with a Rovner ligature, and Vandoren reeds. I would recommend this setup to anyone. The total cost of this setup is about $5500.
