I just went to a glass shop and had them make me one with the measurements I wanted. Worked great until I lost it!

Small pieces of plexiglass work just as well as glass and will not break if your drop it. If you insist of real glass, get a thick piece, like they use for table tops or bank teller windows. Keep searching, if your lucky, you "might get a break." Glad I could help--LOL

Tam--

Try looking in the telephone book "Yellow Pages" under GLASS -- PLATE AND WINDOW. You should find a number of shops.

Decide how big you want your piece or pieces of glass to be. Possibly a larger one for use at home (maybe 4x8, 6x12, or 12x12 inches) and another, smaller one (perhaps 3/4 inch by 3 inches) for your case--stored safely.

You probably want quarter-inch thick plate glass. The shop will cut it to the size(s) you want . They will bevel the edges for an extra fee, or you can (carefully) sand the edges and corners smooth with wet wet&dry sandpaper (maybe 320 grit).

Call or visit one or more of the shops to get prices.

Todd beat me to it. Yes, that is exactly what I did with one small one for my case and the larger one for home use, and it worked great. I was very careful not to drop it. Cost? This was 20 years ago so I don't remember the cost - sorry.

Tempered glass costs a little more than regular window glass but it's flatter - if you're particular about that sort of thing.

Vandoren has such a small glass plate, about the width and length of a read. It fits well in a case.

In general, Vandoren has all kinds of neat gadgets related to reeds, mouthpieces, ligature, etc. Go see your favorite Vandoren distributor.

A glass dental mixing slab is nice for home and about the perfect size. It is a heavy piece of glass about 8"x4"x3/4". Can be had through dental supply houses. The last one I bought was about 25 years ago.

Any window shop should be able to make up one for you... the thicker the better. They can also send it out to be tempered if you wish.

Plate glass is used for its flatness (like my "new" word?) I was taught in engine courses to use only plate glass or a machined tool table (like a drill press, or table saw) as a standard for measuring the straightness of engine parts.

Only plate glass will do, rolled window glass or plexiglass (acryllic) are not all that flat. Quarter inch is a good thickness. I wonder about tempered glass as it can be optically distorted, but I don't know if it is any less flat. Any glass supplier that does store fronts, table tops or mirror work can supply this. The small piece needed surely will be available as scrap, likely the only charge will be for dressing the edges. (Be sure to have the edges dressed for safety's sake, and discard the piece if it breaks or chips.)

Glass lenses used in welding helmets work well

Donn, My welding helmet has very thin, brittle glass. The major dimensions are good however and the glass is cheap (<$2.00). If i used that I would glue it down to a piece of wood or plexiglass... something to back it up, make it easier to handle and less breakable.

Jim, Tempered glass distortion is not due to a deficit of flatness, it is a polarizing effect on the surface. In other words it is not an effect of surface irregularity, it is an optical effect due to the tempering process.

For our purposes almost any glass will do. The thick ones are best because they are stronger and easier to handle. If you drop them they are less likely to break. Be sure to have the edges rounded off a bit if you go to a glass shop... they will run it against their belt sander to do this... so you don't get cut with it. Before you buy a piece of glass you can check it with a straight edge for flatness.

I just noticed that Weiner's sells a piece of glass for working on reeds. The small one is abot $3.50. That one should be available at a glass shop for about $1, with no shipping.
