 old clarinet

I have an "old" (I'll refrain from "antique") clarinet that's been sitting in my closet for ages, and I don't know anything about it. Not the modern key system...register key wraps around to the front, no rings on the top three holes, 3 trill keys on top, 2 keys on each side on the bottom segment. Marks on the bell are "France" with a picture of a rooster underneath, "Ferrand(Fernand?) Champlain" Anyone have any ideas? It's in good condition except for a badly chipped mouthpiece and is playable (though a bit difficult for me to figure out fingerings) I'd appreciate any help!

You probably had a little misspelling there. Here's something close:

Fernand Chapelain & Cie. fl La Couture, 1890-1917
Makers & dealers, advertised as successors to Godfroy Aine, later trading as 'Chapelain fils & gendre'; 1917 bought by Robert Siour, now as Siour-Chapelain.

MARK: (cock) / FERNAND / Chapelain / & Cie (in oval cartouche) / FC (monogram)

PATENT: 1889 (F) #198427: clarinet in metal

It appears you have an old Albert-Muller system clar like one I have. You can find fingering charts in the old [turn-of-the century] tutor-manuals and discussion-history in the several books, Rendall, Brymer, Sachs, Lawson, Baines, Pino, Willaman. Mine plays poorly compared to our moderns. Mark, I presume the patent is French [Fr] since the no. is too low for a US, thanx for it and see Dee's chat post.

Don - you're absolutely right, of course. The (F) indicates French in the abbrev. in the New Langwill

La Couture is a little village 50 km West of Paris (France .. of course).
There is a small museum dedicated to woodwinds.
Its site is : http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/musee_des_instruments_a_vent/ (with also an English version)

If I visit it one day, I will give you my opinion.

Denis
