 Question for the tech gurus!
Author: Matt Locker

Can the keys for the right hand little finger be adjusted higher or lower than the factory sets them? I'm realizing that my Yamaha keys are lower than other clarinets I have played, which makes playing the right hand E/B fingering somewhat difficult. If this is possible, how difficult is it for a qualified tech to do? Risks??

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
I can be done fairly easily by a good tech, with little risk. The main difficulty is that it also requires re-adjusting the 'crow's foot' and the l.h. pinky (alternate middle C) lever clearances to eliminate play and ensure that the two lowest pads seal simultaneously when fingering the low E/middle B.

Again, I'll post my "simple-minded" solution to the rt hand E/B. For me it is related to the too-low position of the usual mfgr's thumbrest location. May I suggest putting your rt thumb ON TOP OF the TR , reaching for the E/B touchpiece to see if a higher location "is right for you"!! It is for me. Don

David:

Thank you for the reply. I will talk to my tech about it.

Don:

I flipped my TR over and it did help a bit. I also tried the Koomien Etude TR but did not like it so I'm back to the original TR. What I have realized though is that the real difference between this and my spare clarinet (as well as the other 2 instruments I recently sold) is the height of these keys relative to the location of the finger holes/keys. My belief is that the difficulty I have will be resolved if I can get these keys lifted a bit.

Thanks also for the reply. If I hadn't already been through this exercise I would consider it as a valuable experiment to try.

Matt
