 Church Solos?
Author: Carl

Does anybody know of any short, around 5 minutes, solos that are appropriate for church? With or without piano accompaniment. And at the intermediate or slightly advanced level. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That depends on whether you're seeking "classical-ish" fare or some sort of hymn-tune arrangement. I know there are arrangements of hymn tunes for piano and b-flat instrument, for example. I could even dig up some ISBN numbers if you like. For classical, I'm not expert but even if you just played the adagio from some piece as an offertory that could work fine.

The available, inexpensive booklet "Clarinet Sessions" [I gave mine to my grandson]had a number of solo, duet, trio etc selections, my favorite was a cl trio "Adagio" by Mozart, very suitable for church. Also ask your music [choir] director to see what is available readily. I'm sure many denominations [ like the Southern Baptists] have arrangements of hymns and oratorio pieces for solos up to symph. size groups. Don

Some pieces which have worked well for me: Panis Angelicus by Cesar Franck; Handel's Largo from Xerxes; Schubert's Ave Maria; Bizet's Agnus Dei; Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze; Mozart's Ave Verum. Try the Adagio from the Mozart Clarinet Concerto and cut it if it is too long.
If you have a bit of technical facility, Bach's Wachet Auf! from Cantata 140 is great. You play all the black notes and the piano or organ need only do the theme and chords. Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is great but somewhat difficult to play seamlessly as it should be done.
Spirituals are always a good bet -- Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Deep River, Balm in Gilead, Goin' Home (actually the slow movement from Dvorak Sym #9).
Lastly, try to stay in the low or middle register. The old folks, especially, seem to love the low register on the clarinet.

I picked up a couple of compilations from Barnes&Noble: Sacred Melodies for Clarinet Solo by Dr. Norman Heim; and Contemporary Gospel Favorites by Douglas Schoen.

The first has piano accompaniment. Maybe those will help.

Willy HESS: the number 4 of the "5 Tonstücke für Bassetthorn und Klavier", published at AMADEUS, Switzerland
[5 tone pieces for basset horn - alternative part for Bb clarinet is included - and piano]
I allready played this movement (3/4 measures, Moderato amabile) a few times in the church.

You might try out a collection of pieces by Bernstein
published by Boosey& Hawkes that has in it Psalm 23(2nd
mvt. from Chichester Psalms) and A Simple Song from Mass.

Also the new collection called Aria published by Carl Fischer by Stoltzman. Good Luck.
