It's a little high if it needs any work at all, and it looks like pads are a sure thing. There's another Selmer alto running right now that appears to be in better shape and might end up at about the same price without needing as much work. It might be a bit newer, as well.

According to the Selmer serial # chart at http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/Selmer.html the older one, ser. # X8980, dates from 1974, The newer one, ser. # A4933, is from 1979.

They're not quite identical. On the older one, the extension on the left ring finger key is angled out to the side, while on the newer one it's more toward the top. The older one has quite a bit of wear on the key surfaces. Still, the price is below what Selmer altos usually go for on eBay. I'd say it's worth the Buy-It-Now price, even though it's sure to need new pads and corks. The one thing I worry about is that the trademark isn't visible on any of the photos.

The newer one does look in better condition, but there's some pitting on the keys, and a seller who says "I think the body is made of wood" obviously doesn't know much.

On either one, I wouldn't buy without a return option if there are cracks.

I downloaded and enlarged a picture of the older one. The upper joint has a logo the size and shape and location of a Selmer logo. Given that, as well as a serial number consistent with Selmer's numbering scheme and plateau keys which are the same design as Semer used, I would not be too concerned that the instrument isn't a Selmer. What I can't figure out, though, is how an instrument that needs a complete repad and adjustment "plays well." LOL

Same as one I recall from a while back, reportedly "In great shape, needs complete overhaul."
