Our community band played its 25th anniversary concert on the evening of Sept. 11th. I think we were the only organization in town to keep to its original schedule. We had paid for the concert hall and hired a guest conductor and other "frills," so I figured that's why we went ahead with it. I showed up at the appointed time and was shocked to see the bottom floor of the auditorium already 3/4 filled with people 45 min. ahead of the concert. As we put our instruments together and got out our music, it was almost stunning to look at our list of pieces, beginning with "America the Beautiful," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and including a piece called "New York 1927." All were scheduled months before the tragedy. We played better than I've ever heard and it was so nice to take a break from the news.
I've had people stop me on the street to thank me for being a part of that and going ahead with the concert.

Great experience, Brenda, we have had similar concerts "Right Here in River City" [OK] , I've never heard our patriotics sung and played any better. Its a fine way to communicate our multiplicity of feelings, isnt it? Don

At the Manhattan school of music, there's a wall where someone put up a big piece of paper, mural style. Everyone's been writing things on it. Prep students, college students, parents, professers...everyone. Patriotic, pro war, anti war, drawings of uncle sam or the twin towers, peace signs...it's great. And it changes every time I'm there. I like that.

My university band traditionally does an American tribute for the Veterans. Before the tragedy, one of our pieces was American Elegy. Our director had us play this the day after the WTC collapsed and we played better than ever. Music is so powerful, it's great!

Great story. I had the opportunity on Oct. 7th to play in a benefit concert of all patriotic music. Music is powerful. I love it.
