There are some topical things you can put on them like Kanka (which I think is camphor oil) or Zovirex (which is a prescription cream - there are also some other over the counter products). Also, you might want to avoid things like chocolate and coffee which have chemicals that can make these sores worse. Also, check out on the internet the amino acid, Lyceine. There are those who say that 1000 mg of Lyseine a couple of times a day will get rid of those sores in a couple of days. It has for me from time to time.
By the way, if you are having trouble finding information about those cold sores, try looking up recurring apthous ulcers because that is one of the formal names for them.
Please keep in mind that I am not offering medical advice here, just passing along some information I have found over time. As I said, I've used the Lyceine with success. It is available at health food stores and through vitamin houses.

I have used Anbesol with great results to relieve pain and help heal 'em fast. If you use the gel, it stays in place best.
