Hey ya'll, I need some help real quick. I was going to practice the other day as usual. I began to tighten my ligerature (one of those cheap, metal ones. You know, the ones that have 2 screw things on the side of the mouthpiece where the reed goes), and the top screw just snapped in half. So I need a new lig before november. I guess you could say that my mp has bit the dust too. What I want to know is, if I bought a mp, would a lig come with it? We're trying to save a lot of money this month so I kinda hope we don't have to buy 2 separate things. does anyone know of any decent mouthpieces that don't cost amy more than about $30 at a music store? I want one that would, I guess, um enhance my tone? If there aren't any for thirty, maybe $40? Please help. I would appreciate any advice.

hmmmmmmmm personally i say that any mouthpiece under 50 dollars i a total waste of money. They aren't well made and you won't have fun playing the clarinet, mouthpiece, lig and reed are the most complicated part of the instument, its where the sound comes from. You can have the best clarinet in the world but if you have a bad mouthpiece or lig, ect then it wont make a difference. I say get a richard hawkins mouthpiece if you change your mind along with a vandoren optimum ligature. but if you insisist in getting something like that. I would say just get a richard hawkins student mouthpiece i think they are 40 or something at international musical suppliers, thats the only good student mouthpiece i would know of and try the lyben clar lig, that would work well

I would say you're wrong, at least in the plastic student line. Besides the student Hawkins, there's the Pyne, Fobes, and Hite student models.

Since you've been playing awhile, of the ones Mark has identified, I would recommend the Fobes Debut, particularly if you are going the mail order route and won't be able to try several different types. I think it will work well for you. It has a bit more resistance than the Hite Premier. I have never played a student Hawkins or a Pyne so I don't know how they compare to the Fobes. Perhaps someone else will be able to comment. You might also try a Brilhart Ebolin if your store has them. They come in different facings so you would have a variety of choices. Brilhart has been around for a long time and I think they give good quality for the price. I have been playing their mouthpieces on my saxes for 40 years.
Thanks to GBK, it looks like the ligature is covered but if you need to buy one in a hurry, the Luyben is a good choice for an inexpensive model (under $6 mail order).
Best regards,
jnk

Many students in this area are using the Hite Premier Mouthpiece ($20-$30). Be sure to get some good reeds (check archives here for information). You may want to read Daniel Bonade's "Clarinetist's Compendium" for good information on clarinet playing! Good luck!
