Serial number 61xxx. When did R-13 production begin? How is this horn likely to differ from the R-13? I understand that the intonation of these horns is pretty good. Does anyone have any info about horns of this vintage?

R13 polycylindrical bore productions was established by at least 1955, and possibly sooner - no one is quite sure exactly when it went into production.
A '59 will most probably have the same polycylindrical bore of an R13 of the same year. AFAIK of the high end Buffets only the RC has a different style of bore than the R13 (2 step on the RC vs. 3 step on the R13).

61xxx *is* an R-13. That series was excellent, so if it's in good condition, you have a clarinet worth keeping.

Ken......lucky you !! yes, it is an R13 as Ken and Mark mentioned. You will no doubt notice the quality of the wood....tighter and straighter grained, darker, the outside surface(inside also) is almost smooth to the point that a finger nail glides across the grain.
At least this is all I and others have noticed with my 1959 (60,xxx) A clarinet. The intonation is better than much later ones and when Russianoff picked it out, nothing was done to the tone holes for intonation. The same holds true for it's twin, the Bb. ENJOY playing it !!

Wow. I guess I lucked out. All I was looking for was a FB for my collection. I bid $405 on Ebay. The reserve was $699. I didn't win the auction, but the seller offerred me the horn at my lower price. It came with two barrels (its a 442) and two mouthpieces, including a Vandoren M. It needs some work, but it feels nice.

I got a 1953 R13 off e-Bay. Excellent clarinet. Had to get serious
about the mouthpiece, after over 3 hours of blow-testing at
Woodwind and Brasswind, settled on VanDoren 5RVLyre/13/88.
Worked great. I got worried about the age of the mechanism
and especially the wood so I sent it to Larry Naylor for a
complete re-build with "organic oil immersion." His
website http://naylors-woodwind-repair.com explains the process.
(no I am not unbiased). Now it works beautifully. With the
articulated G# and the extra Eb I am a happy camper.
You will note that Buffet's website advertises a "Vintage R13"
that is intended to match your 1959 and my 1953 R13s. That
should tell you something.

I don't believe that Buffet actually manufactured a polycylindrical R13 in '53; at least that's what we've been led to believe from spokesmen at the factory. Have you had it checked for the bore? Because, if it truly is a polycylindrical R13 it'd be of real interest.
There is a lot of confusion Re: R13s. Carl Fischer was the sole importer of Buffet clarinets for quite a while and had named a certain model the "R13", but it is not a polycylindrical model.
Have it checked out by Buffet if you can! Please!

Stamped Evette & Schaffer- Paris France-Modele Buffet Crampon" mouthpiece stamped "A-Paris Crampon CIE with a letter "C" stamped on moutpiece serial number K18154 whats it worth my son plays what can you tell me about this instrumment. thank you
