Hi!
Iīve been playing the clarinette for about half a year. What I have is a new Yamaha 26II with a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece. After all this time Iīm still not happy with the sound, and my teacher suggested I would buy another mouthpiece īcause he thought the one Iīm using really isnīt very good e.g. for playing classical music. He suggested a Vandoren B40, and said this is the most common and it is used by many professionals. Is that true? (my teacher is actually a saxophone player and I donīt know whether to beleive everything he says...) He suggested either the B40 or the B45. Whatīs the difference? I would be really glad if anyone could give some advice on which one to buy. I mostly like playing ballads and classical music, so I want one which is good for "long notes". A mouthpiece is quite expensive so I want one that I can play on for several years (not one used only for beginners)

My clarinet teacher used to play in one of the military bands in DC, so he is very good, and I trust him completely. He reccomends the Vandoren 5RV lyre, which (from experience) is better than the B45. Right now, I play the James Pyne polycrystal, which I like. these mpcs are very good, more for serious players than the B45.

I don't know if it is fair to say that one mouthpiece is "better" than the other. The B40 is a very open mouthpiece (meaning, when the reed is on the mouthpiece, the distance between the reed and the rails/tip is farther away than a more "closed" mouthpiece). B45 is also somewhat open, but not as much as the B40. 5RV Lyre is more closed than the B45. The 5RV Lyre tends to have the reputation of being a good "student" mouthpiece, because it is supposed to be more easy to control. I know people who sound great on B40's and B45's, and also people who sound great on much more closed mouthpieces, like M15's. If possible, try a few different models with different openness ratings, to see what works best for you.

I use a B40 13 on my R13 clarinet. Vandoren v12 #3 reeds. Good controlled sound, easy articulation.

I think the reed on B40 should be softer than that on B45 and B45 should have a greater volumn and its sound should have more variety.

B40 was designed under the guidance of Guy Deprus(spell?) of Paris Concervatoir.
Its design purpose is, as Vandoren's page describes, to admit softer reeds such as Vandoren 2.5 or 3 without sacrificing tone quality. I used to use it. It was very good although I recognized a slight deformity of table flatness and remedied it with a Hard Arkansas oil stone.

The B40 is really not any more open than the B45 by any streatch, in fact the tip openings are identical and I have found reeds that work on the B45 play well on the B40 too. In my opinion, however, I have found greater warmth of tone in the B40 over the B45 and also a greater control of dynamics and sound color. It is currently popular now in the UK and France (the B40) primarily because it has more focus and velvety quality over the more brilliant B45. Jean Paul gauvin came up with design primarily to create a darker robust sound for the Boehmn clarinet with the ability to use ligher type reeds...that being said it is also required to have a very well developed embouchure to enable one to play this mouthpiece correctly..out of 50 or so I now have two B40s which I totally love! I think of all the current products out there the B40 is really fine for projection and body of sound without some of the thiness I associate with the RV facings.
