 Schumann Fantasy pieces
Author: Wayne
Date:   2001-10-14 04:00

After 7 months of scales, long notes, klose studies and other assorted work my teacher has finally given me a "real" piece to start playing. Im working from the Peters Edition of Schumann Fantasy pieces, Opus 73. Does anyone know of a recording I can buy of these pieces. After 20 years of not playing, it's great to have a real peice of music to play !!! Thanks

Go to and of the CD places online and type in "Phantasiestücke" for a keyword. There's a ton of recordings of this particular piece.

I've got the Steven Kanoff recording of the schumann fantasiestuke. the cd is titled "clarinet music of the 19th and 20th century." it also has my favorite recording of the poulenc sonata that i've heard. i love his playing. good luck!

Among Harold Wright (Boston Records BR1005CD), Michael Collins (EMI) and Im Soo Lee (Summit DCD235), I will vote for Harold Wright. But I think K. Leister's version should also be a good choice.

Steven Kanoff?? I'll have to look that one up Katherine. There are quite alot of recordings of this piece in the UK - I myself have 2 of them at home - both of which interpret the last movement differently. Emma Johnson plays it very staccato, whilst the fella (can't remember his name) plays it alot more legato, and with a lot of force, which I prefer. However - this piece was actually originally written for violin, not the clarinet so Wayne: From a certain point of view, you STILL might not be playing a REAL piece.
- Just Wondering - How can anyone put up with playing long scales for 7 months? It would drive me CRAZY!

hmm .. wasn't Schumann's Op 73 written first of all for clarinet, and ad ib. for violin or cello?
Or did I get something wrong ?

DLE -

The Schumann Fantasy Pieces were written for clarinet. The original publisher put on the cover that they could also be played on cello, but that was simply to increase sales. For the same reason, there are alternative transpositions of the solo part for viola and violin. I must say they work wonderfully on cello and almost as well on viola, and there's nothing much we can do about Our Music getting poached by other instruments. There's even a recent recording of the Brahms Quintet with the clarinet part played on viola.

Anyway, the Schumann 3 Pieces for Oboe are superb for A clarinet, so we can hardly complain.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

.. poaching Our Music .. :-)

I'm enjoying John Wallace playing Brahms Op. 120 No. 2
on his cornet (?) at the moment:

Watch the board, I will be putting a post out about this subject. I think you are right by the way - but then, nobody's perfect!
