LOL it was great fun! I can't wait for high school. One question, can bass be in marching band? Just wondering, i was the only one out of 400 kids lol

My HS marching band was 500 people, we had 6-8 bass clarinets during my 4 years. So answering your question... yes a bass can be in marching band.

just adding onto what Robert Gifford was saying.......I guess basses can be in marching band but at Seminole the bass clarinets don't march they play the soprano clarinet.

I am soooo glad you had fun last night. I did I know thats for sure. Did you dance when everyone else was?? I was trying to get as many people to dance as possible but some still weren't dancing. :( Well I gotta go I have marching practice from 8am-12!!!!!! heheheeh bye

yeah i danced lol. well, i only new the person in front of me, he was at my school last year. one guy had a beard lol. The one that i knew was Jocimar Neeta, i think. Oh well, hope you have fun at practice

Glad the experience worked out so well. Marching band can add some wonderful experiences and memories to your musical career.
One small word of caution to Ted and Mindy . . .
This bb is very public. Names (especially of others) and schedules of school-age people are a bit innappropriate (read "risky") to broadcast. Direct contact via email is much safer.
Hope you are not offended at the suggestion. It wasn't meant to be critical, just precautionary.

Bass clarinets can be marched, but I wouldn't recommend doing it if you are under the height of 5'5"...trust me, I know these things.

At my high school, we had a small concert band, about 30-35 people every year. When it came time for a parade, we were all supposed to show up and that would be the marching band. Sometimes only half of the band would show up. Anyway...I played bass all four years here. A little tip: dont use too much cork grease on your bell. (mine fell off once!!!)

I've even seen contrabass clarinet marched (maybe twice). We marched bass at my high school. You might find yourself on Bb clarinet or Tenor Sax, though. Neither is a hard instrument to double on. A good ol' Vito is a more nimble marching instrument than most saxes. The problem is you get relatively little volume/marcher in the key bass lines. Have fun.

Yeah right, under 5'5"... Our bass clarinet section leader this year was 5'2" and did just fine. She marched contralto for a week and then hurt her ankle so switched back to bass.
I'm trying to march contralto next year, or at least bass. We try to have (at least)two bass clarinets or lower in our band, and next year we might go as far as having five. (Watch us have one.)
Make sure your strap doesn't break, ALWAYS have electrical tape and an elastic hair-tie (You can fix any marching bass clarinet with electrical tape and a hair-tie!), and don't be surprised if you cut your mouth on the reed once or twice. Other than that, you'll be fine.
(If you're lucky, at a competition you'll see a wraparound contrabass clarinet being marched, The almighty compact triple-paperclip clarinets!! Ugly things, but still cool.)

I guess I wouldn't know then, even though I'm 5'3" myself and injured myself marching bass clarinet (not to mention injured the horn) so many times...perhaps I'm just clumsy.
I tried marching contra too---not only did the horn fail and break, I couldn't take any steps bigger than a 6 to 5.

Sorry for my harsh contradiction. All basses are different. I found out that the 5'2" section leader had premature arthritis in her knees too; that takes DETERMINATION!! Maybe she just compensated for her size the way she compensated for her knees.
Isn't 6 to 5 normally a larger-than-average step size anyway? The biggest I've taken is 4 to 5, and standard is 8 to 5, most of the time I have a very VERY small size (like 256 to 5, I had that once.) 6 to 5 is a nice remedy.
Once again, I apologize for my harsh objection. It's just I really respect our bass clarinet section leader who seems to do the impossible. (What a coincidence, her name is Leandra!)

What I always forget is most bands don't take much bigger than a 6 to 5...during the show, it's nothing for me to take a 4 to 5.
I respect your bass clarinet section leader too---that's a really incredible feat! My year on bass clarinet was my first year marching.
Perhaps my word of advice should really be, yes bass clarinet can be marched. Just try a year with a smaller instrument first, so you get the hang of it without an instrument dragging on the ground.
I happen to know from experience that sometimes you type something that doesn't sound mean. Unfortunately, the person not hearing the tone of voice you intended, doesn't know how you meant it.

It helps to be careful, though, with what we say and all.
4 to 5 is nothing??????? GOSH!! I'm impressed! Wherever you march, I'd like their tips on overlarge step-sizes. So, have you ever done 2 to 5 steps before? Is THAT routine?
What do you think about the overly small steps? The smallest size I ever counted... hold on, one girl had 36 steps to move one sixteenth of a yard line. That's a... 36... 72... a 576 to 5 step... just shy of mark-time. The biggest size I ever counted was around 3 to 5 (backwards, of course. I had that.)

Once I get over 4 to 5, I call it fairy hopping---I've done that many times. The overly small steps are fun, just remember, high toes!
