 Fibracell Reeds

There has been some discussion about synthetic reeds on the BB. Have any of you done a comparison between Legere and Fibracell. I have not been too enchanted with Legere for my Bass Clarinet/Tenor sax. It warped and split at the tip. Have any of you used Fibracell's for Bass/Tenor Sax? Legere for Bass/Tenor Sax?
I coupled these together because they IMHO appear to be the same reed and sell (discountreeds.com-a"Sneezy" sponsor))for the same price.
Could we have a thread on the pro's and con's of Fibracells please?

I have used Fibracell off and on for about three years. I find that with some tweeking they can be quite good. My jazz teacher does not like me to use plastic, but he cannot tell their sound from the sound of cane on the mini-disks I make for him to review at lessons.

I also use cane, but often find they don't last very long for me.
Perhaps it is my saliva.

I use fine grit sandpaper and occasionally a reed cutter on the Fibracells.

I have used Legere and find that they are altolgether too bright [sharp].

Frank, in the land of the "little people"
What strength do you start with? I am only using a 2 1/2 with Walter's CXBB Bass mouthpiece. I know he recommended a 3 but I have not worked up to it as yet. Do they "soften" as some say or should I start with a 2 1/2?

The fibracells I've seen have all been "soft" or "hard." I've never found an actual numerical size distinction.

jenna: Discountreeds has them listed as soft/medium-soft/medium/medium-hard/hard. No numerical equiv. given. Does one buy 1/2 (roughly) harder because some say they soften up with use???

The one Legere I tried just didn't work for me. I just finished playing with a brand new Fibracell, and it was great straight out of the package. I use a Hard.

I have always used hard. It didn't seem as hard as say my mitchel laurie 5's... but maybe a 3 1/2? I never had a problem with breaking them in until i finally had to get rid of one. I noticed it was a little "flaky," then one day at marching band practice it stopped vibrating. Was strange, but I had a handy backup. =)

People are crazy about both. I have tried both and prefer a 2 1/2 Van Dorn. (On my medium facing J&D Hite.) Many years ago I used an old no-name hard rubber mpc that was quite open. Then, I preferred a La Voz soft. If I got used to a different mpc, I might prefer one of the synthetic. Choose what works best for you.

Did you notice on e-Bay.. Somebody is "selling" a pair of medium's for about one-fourth again over what you could buy them for at <www.discountreeds.com) a "Sneezy" sponsor. Go figure?
