I played it for my HS senior recital 22 years ago. Get a metronome. The tendency will be to rush. Save the fireworks for the cadenza.

This work is another standard repertoire piece, and most clarinetists study it at one time. It was used as the winning piece of the "Solo de Concours" competition at the Paris Conservatory in 3 different years (1901, 1908, and 1937). The tempo markings should be followed fairly closely, however being careful not to rush the final sixteenth notes in the 2/4 section (last page). Don't let it sound out of control.
Prepare the opening cadenza carefully, shaping the different phrases, and pausing slightly in the appropriate locations. Don't let it sound like a clarinet exercise!!! Overall, this is a nice solo which gives you a chance to be expressive in the opening and the ensuing Largo section, but at the same time show a little flash in the final Allegro...GBK

The opening 8 measures are usually treated as a cadenza, as the piano accompaniment only consists of 2 different sustained chords (Meas.1-4, Meas. 5-8). The final 5 measures of the opening section (Meas. 9-13) should be carefully worked out with the pianist at a Moderato tempo (metronome marking approx 66) with a ritard in meas. 12 and 13 to set up the ensuing Largo section...GBK

Some of you might be interested to know that the MusicMinusOne recording of this piece features Harold Wright, former principal clarinet of the Boston Symphony and perhaps the greatest clarinetist of all time.

Late Harold Wright recorded this piece in MMO Laureate series.
You can listen to his performance and play yourself with piano.
