I'm looking for a new mouthpiece to go with my Selmer Soloist, and I've narrowed it down to either the Standard 201HS* or HS**. My question is, what's the difference between these two? Could someone explain to me what the different tip openings do, exactly? Is one better than the other?
Sorry for all the questions. I'm excited that I got a new clarinet!

I wouldn't get either one. Check out a Fobes Nova/Debut or a Hite Premier.

Rafael -
In the Selmer mouthpiece nomenclature, a "*" means "more open." The HS* is medium length and fairly close. The HS** is medium length and fairly open. It depends on what you prefer. I've always found the HS* to be closer than I like, but that's me, not you.
I agree with John that for the money, you'll probably do better with the Fobes or Hite.
Best regards.

Take the one that "feels" the best. Nobody can tell that for you. It's a personal thing.
good luck

A point to keep in mind--Selmer mpcs are designed expecially for Selmer clarinets and shold be a good accoustical match, although mine always tended to play too sharp. I preferred the more open HS**, but you should pick the one that is best for you. However, a better mpc choice might be the Greg Smith "Kasper" model, which I own and play on my LeBlancs. Info may be found in the "Sponsers" section--he is easy to work with and will help you select the correct mpc for you. A bit expensive, but worth every $. Good Clarineting!!!!!! (Greg is a current member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestras "best in the world-IMHO" clarinet section)

Henri Selmer (France) URL gives you a tip opening chart.
At this page, push 'bec(mouthpiece) clarinet'.
http://www.selmer.fr/html/french/bec/index.htm
(Although this is written in French, there is not need to have proficiency in French to read the chart.)

Try a B40 or B40 13 series you'll love it.
