jazz summer schools

Hi Guys,

Please help if you can. I have a talented pupil (sax) who would love to attend a jazz summer school in the US. We're both in England, so it's difficult for me to recommend a suitable course for him. He also plays the drums and is looking for a course to combine the two. He also intends to do some travelling in the States when his course has finished. Any ideas?? I've tried looking courses up on the internet, but I get hundreds of links and don't know where to start! My pupil (Calum) will be 16 next summer and I'm sure the right course would be fantastic for him, both musically and on a personal level too. Many thanks for your help.

From personal experiance as an instructor and resident artist (sax and clarinet), I highly recommend this jazz camp http://birchcreek.org as one of the least known, but nonetheless very best, in the United States and Canada. It is a very competative, performance oriented experiance for grade, high school and college musicians alike and is located in beautiful Door county in the state of Wisconsin, USA. Enrollment is limited by the number of jazz ensembles and combos available to play in--no doubling of parts is practiced. The faculty ensembles--made up of artists and teachers from all over the US and Cananda--as well as the student groups, perform together in concerts open to the paying public, so quality in performance is critical and emphasised. i went to theAebersold clinics once in London. The teachers were qualified, but generally tired and their class manner expressed boredom. Aebersold's classes were marked by an excessive amount of jokes and cartoon illustrations. I figure they were all tired after running clinics in the US.

This is only a sample of one, but I suggest looking around.

There's a jazz camp at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. I don't have any personal experience with it but you might want to check it out. Their programs are generally very good.
