You'd better watch out and not pout

When your "signifcant other" - boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband, etc. (the list has gotten too long and politically correct to include all the premutations) -- says that they are going to surprise (they are eventually going to drop enough hints to figure out that it is a new horn) you with a new clarinet for the Holidays -- do not get too excited because it may be either red or purple from pg. 344 of the J.C. Penny's Holiday Catalog. Just seem excited and gently probe about brand (these do not carry a brand name in the catalog ad) -- and say that there are some brands that are better horns than some other brands, then say that you just adore the dark chocolate black color of unstained quality grenadilla wood! So good luck!!

Dear Folks -
This is intended as a nonsensical post. The illusion in the title is to Santa Claus lore and his observations about good behavior in making up his list of Christmas gifts. I am sure that all of us have received gifts that cost the giver a fair amount of money that we feel are totally useless to us. Of course, the spirit is in the giving!

We often talk about the relative merits and demerits of particular brands of clarinets. This is just a fun thing because J.C. Penny (I have no particular axe to grind with them or likewise wish to endorse them) is offering plastic clarinets (I have not been able to find out the maker) in either red or purple in their big Holiday Catalog where a number of people shop for gifts for friends, significant others, etc.. I was just thinking that probably the most useless gift that I could receive would be an inferior plastic clarinet in purple - but with a pleasant thank you to the giver!

From the message title, I thought it was another Ari Fleischer comment...

-- A CHRISTMAS FANTASY --
Ellen (wife): Here you are, dear, it's your Christmas present!
John: Oh, thank you so much. [rips paper off package] My, would you look at that! A nice case. And look what it has in it... oh, how nice and Christmasy! It's a beautiful red! And look at these gorgeous little cast pot-metal keys. Isn't the micro-thin plating so pretty and shiny!?
Ellen: Do you like it?
John: Are you kidding? This beautiful table lamp kit? Of course I like it! You know I've been wanting a new lamp for my work table.
Ellen: Huh?
John: And it'll be so much fun to get the rest of the parts and assemble it. This is great!
Ellen: Well, I....
John: Say, dear, isn't you hair quite a bit shorter? It looks as if it'll take a while before you can use these beautiful combs I got for you. Here they are. [hands over small package]
Ellen: I thought you'd like a clarinet to play....
John: Well, it might be nice, but... you see, dear, I sold my reed collection. Yes, the whole thing. It'll be a long time before I can play the clarinet again. But so what. This -- this will make such a beautiful lamp! Just what I wanted. I'll *always* remember this Christmas.
Ellen: Well, uhmm, Merry Christmas, darling.
John: Yes indeed, dear, Merry Christmas!
