I am a pretty good clarinet player and have just moved to NYC from London. I am
looking for some good quality orchestral and chamber playing and am also looking
for a teacher. Previously I was principal clarinet in the kensington symphony orchestra www.kso.org.uk which is one of London's top amateur orchestras. If
anyone reading this can put me in touch with orchestras and teachers in New York
then I would be very grateful.

May I recommend Larry Guy and Jerry Korsten (presuming you can fit into their perfomance schedule)?
Great players and teacher, the both of them.

There's a wealth of good amateur/sem-pro orchestras in the City. Since I'd like to play regularly in any of them I'm perhaps undercutting my already slim chances, but the ones I know about are:
Lawyers Orchestra, Doctors Orchestra, New York Repertory Orchestra (www.nyro.org), Brooklyn Heights Symphony (www.???.org), Greenwich Village Orchestra, YMHA Orchestra, New Amersterdam Orchestra...
There are several others. One thing to remember, wind positions/openings are farely scarce.
A good resource for learning more about these, as well as chamber music opportunities, is Amateur Chamber Music Players (www.acmp.net). I'm sure ACMP's director has contacts with all the amateur orchestras.
