 Chedeville mouthpieces

I have a Buffet Eb clarinet mouthpiece. It has three lines toward the bottom, the word FRANCE appears along with a B below the lines. Is it a Chedeville blank?
When did Buffet stop including Chedevilles with thier clarinets?
Why dosn't Buffet include a nice mouthpiece with their clarinets anymore?

1. Yes, it is a Ched.
2. In the 1970's.
3. Economics no doubt.
4. Economics to the 3rd power & no one else really does, except for Selmer C85

I look at the bright side of things --- Clarinets have NOT kept up with real cost of money --- inflated prices are prevalent everywhere else in life.

Buffet stock mouthpieces have always been dreadful. I got my first R-13 new in 1970, and I still have the 1-line-up, 3-lines-down mouthpiece stamped "B" that came with it. It's simply unplayable, and no Buffet stock mouthpiece I've tried has been any better. I also had Kalmen Opperman look at it, and he said there was nothing he could do to make it playable. If Dave Tuttle wants it, he can make me an offer, but I'd feel guilty getting anything at all for it.

I also have a Chedeville mouthpiece, and it's nothing like the Buffet, in look or playing quality.

Best regards.

Ken,

Is your mouthpiece also stamped "France" on the left side of the table? The reason I ask is that I recently came across an Evette & Schaeffer mouthpiece with the "one line up, three lines down" configuration (with a C stamped on the right side of the table) but: (1) the bottom lines were spaced much farther apart than on the others I have (all of which are marked "France"), (2) it is not stamped "France," and (3) the "C" is a different font (larger, for one thing) than the others. I think this is a newer one (probably from around 1973) and may not have been made by Chedeville or from a Chedeville blank. I'm just curious if that's what you might have since your clarinet dates from 1970 and Buffet mouthpieces from as early as 1941 have the "Chedeville" characteristic markings. (BTW, Dave Tuttle probably would not want yours in any case. He claims that Buffet refaced the ones with the Buffet logo and, as a result, he does not sell them. Jim Pyne has corroborated the claim that Chedeville made stencil mouthpieces for Buffet.)

Best regards,
Jack

I also remember reading that the Bb Buffet Chedeville mouthpieces were altered by Buffet while the others were not.

"France" to the LEFT of the Table and 3 lines (at the lower extremity of the mouthpiece towards the tenon) _close_ in proximity to one another ---- these are among the attributes which identify the Chedeville. I have a Woodwind mouthpiece (a G8) which is the SAME way. Thus, Buffet didn't have a monopoly on the Ched-stenciled mouthpieces. mw

I have a mouthpiece that fits the chedville desription perfectly, its kinda fatter than my greg smith kasper, I guess cuase its older or something, but when I showed to my teach all he said was that it had been refaced, because is had C285 scratched into it, but then again he didn't get a good look at it. id that good, I mean if it was refaced, and what does that mean, they took theold one off?
Sara :)
