My daughter was given a Selmer Signet Special wooden b-flat clarinet for her birthday a couple of years ago. I paid to have it put back into playing condition by a man who has sold and worked on instruments for nearly 50 years. The only number I can find on it is 31470. We would like to find out the clarinet's age and monetary value.
If anyone can help, we would be grateful.

The instrument dates back approx. to the 1950-1960's. Check with Selmer for an exact dating. I don't think the lists here deal with these intermediate clarinets. I could be wrong.
The Special was the model between the Signet 100 and the Soloist.
I'd guess that value in good to excellent conditionr w/good wood & no significant repairs would be $100 - 300.
eBay has 6 on sale right now, not many takers thus far. 10 sold in the last 30 days, high price of $255..

I own two of these from that era. The one I play is 25704, which was purchased new when I was in the 6th grade(1955-1956), so yours is probably around 1958-1960. I watch these on e-bay and depending on the condition, ones this age generally go from $70 - $200. Of course if it, and it's case, are in pristine condition it could bring more.

The Selmer Signet Special is a reasonably good student clarinet. For estimating purposes, I suggest it has a value of $250. I purchased mine used for $250 in 1976, and played it for ten years before switching back to Bass Clarinet. I think depreciation has been balanced by inflation, keeping the current value about the same.
Since there is a risk involved with E-Bay, I wouldn't pay more than $150 for one there. In a Music Store with a guarantee and you can try it out, expect to pay about $250.
