 Interesting older horn on Ebay

Here is an interesting older horn on Ebay. I've never seen one like it with the blond wood and so many keys. I did have to laugh when I saw the way the reed is attached. ;-)

I don't know how to do a link but here is the address: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1467508559

Pam -

The wood is boxwood, which is very common with instruments from that period. There are 12 keys, which is not an unusually high number. The keys are made of brass, and the key system is that of Mueller. The mouthpiece is probably not original, since it doesn't have grooves for binding the reed on with string, but it appears to be made of wood and is thus fairly old. In the last picture, you will see a gigantic crack, clumsily pinned (that's what the black dots are) and filled in, that appears to run most of the length of the upper joint. This will probably make the instrument unrestorable. Nevertheless, it's quite nice looking.

If you want to know more, go on the Early Clarinet board and ask Al Rice, who's the great expert on old clarinets.

Best regards.

Anyone else notice that the reed has been placed in the mouthpiece pointing the wrong way?

My only thought on looking at the reed in the mouthpiece was YUCK and then I looked away.

I would assume that the tenons are wrapped in red thread rather than cork. I wish it would have shown them.
