Yes, the infamous 1st etude......
What do you look for from your students in this etude?
I am out for some fresh ideas. Thanks!

Lynn......you may want to try Henry Larsen's Analysis and Study Guide for the 32 Etudes. He was a teacher at Hartt College and recently passed away after retiring to Florida. Although I studied at Hartt with Hadcock and drove to NYC for Russianoff, Henry was a fine teacher and gentleman, and did an excellent job of analyzing the 32 Etudes. You can order the book from Gary Van Cott (a SNEEZY contributor) in Las Vegas. He has it in stock. He's in contact with Henry's son if you need more information. Gary's web page is
www.vcisinc.com. He offers many books on clarinet playing, studies, its history, etc. Good luck. Dennis

Dynamics & articulation. As I recall the 2nd half adds some ornamentation, correct? Dennis is correct. Larsen's book is oworth the $$$ and really goes into some depth.

You might be interested to know that either Robert Marcellus or Ralph McLane took all of the slow etudes found in Rose's 32 and added phrase markings and other indications of how he feels it should be played, however i don't know if this is still in circulation. My private teacher has a copy of the book however he's out of town. If anyone can confirm exactly which of the players did this please let me know thanx

Keil -
I've never seen a Rose markup by Marcellus or McLane. I'd suspect that it was the copy that had been marked up in lessons. If it's available, it would be Big News. Please ask your teacher about it.
McLane had very few students. Marcellus had lots. I'd suspect that if it came from one of them, it was Marcellus.
Query to David Hattner -- did you do the Rose 32 with Marcellus? Any markings?
Best regards.
Ken Shaw

The odd numbered studies in the Rose 32, 1,3,5 etc. were edited as "phrasing studies" by Daniel Bonade and published by Leblanc. I have no idea if they are still in print.

I have the Larsen analysis of the Rose and had been a student of his years ago. This book is WELL worth getting. It is a great analysis and will give you lots of ideas of what to work on in each etude as well as other thoughts on clarinet playing.

From the ICA Library:
Bonade, Daniel
Sixteen Phrasing Studies for Clarinet
1748, 3948
(odd numbers ... one-half of 32 = 16)

Hiroshi, have you decided to start distributing them ? They are not available in the U.S. I keep on wanting to call the producer of those CD's but the time difference was odd, as I recall. mw
