Although it may be late for this year I am compiling, on behalf of the Chantilly HS (VA) Band Boosters, a directory of Summer Camps. I'm interested in hearing from people who have had "EXCEPTIONAL" experiences. Interlochen in MI... Encore in PA... PAI in PA... Berklee in MA... UNCG... Bowling Green, OH... I have. Eastman Summer Music Horizons program-4 week training in ensemble, theory, and most all the basics of music...
Eastman Summer High School Wind Ensemble- 1 week, this group is great! We rehearse alot in more than just a large ensemble. There's quintets and other chamber groups, as well as 2-3 clinics with Eastman Faculty...(Ken Grant)
I recommend any Summer program at Eastman. There are so many different programs to choose from. Just contact the Community Education Division at Eastman School of Music!

I am not the one with the experience, but my friend who goes to school at UNCGreensboro used to tell me about how good her experience was at the Sewannee Summer Music Camp. I also have good things from other people about it.

This one is not near as prestigious as some listed already. But last year i had a lot of fun at Texas Tech University Band and Orchestra Camp in Lubbock, Texas. Bob Walzel is clarinet prof. there and he did a master class, but only for the clarinets in the top 3 bands. Very good musicians come from literally all over the world. They have 10 bands and 4 full orchestras. SOOO many people and such good ones. A lot of Texas All-State kids come. So although it is not the Best of the Best--it is an awarding, fun, and challenging experience!! Hope that i could help!!

Blue Lake Fine Arts camp, Twin Lakes, MI (near Muskegon, MI - west side of the state) has a very nice program (reasonable competition) and offers international programs, too, if you qualify. My eldest spent a summer in Europe with the International band. My middle son will be there again this summer for their fine jazz program (and he hopes to qualify for the International jazz band for next summer).

I have participated in the National Orchestral Institute Summer Music Program (College Park Maryland). It is very competitive to win a spot, but well worth the effort. I have also partcipated in the Kent-Blossom Music Festival twice and it is very good as well. It is ver competitve (only three person per instrument).

I forgot - Boston University Tanglewood Institute, at Tanglewood. Competitive to get into (4 clarinets last year), but a fine youth orchestra. My son really enjoyed it last summer. Expensive, though.

New York has a pretty good summer music program for advanced students. Its not as prestigious as many others, but its really very good, and competitive. NYSSSA (New York State Summer School for the Arts) Has several divisions - choral, orchestral and band. Each division is held at a different location. A friend of mine attended the Orchestral school for Oboe, and my local SUNY school hosts the choral NYSSSA. Its a great program.

Thinking of New York - Chautauqua Music Festival is there, too; it's open to high school students, but extremely hard to get into. Mostly it's college/grad students.
