WOW, What a monster! Needs a mp, prob. I have a Linton bass clar, plastic one-piece body, overhauled, is quite a good player for a single register key model. Since L [to my knowledge] in the last 60-some years concentrated on oboes and bassoons, one might conclude that they bought clarinets from European mfgrs. and stencilled their name on them. I visited [young] Jack L in Elkhart in the 60's, he had a fine "factory-display" location then. Mark C, can you help w: Langwill etc info, please? Don

I like the arangement of bends - it is a good packaging, esp. for a BBb Contrabass. The bore is huge, though. I'm thinking they may have made some unnecessary compromises to keep the length down. Thoughts on how this would sound compared to a LeBlanc paperclip?
I get the feeling that it can't take normal contra mouthpieces. Normal contra mouthpieces are not the size of a soda can.
Workmanship and design on contras tend vary from the rest of a makers line IMO. Its such a different animal from anything else except a Bari Sax in manufacture that its very hard to extrapolate their skill. The design tradeoffs are also very different. This horn is at the opposite end of the design spectrum from the LeBlanc paperclips. (Its easer for Eb's as they're much more similar to basses.)

There was a lot of conversation concerning this instrument on the repair bullentin board. The mouthpiece is very large. One concern was reeds....a regular contra reed did not fit the mouthpiece properly according to one source, but then again I haven't seen the moutpiece first hand so that information may or may not be correct. I would certainly pose the question of the seller before making a bid.

Have you seen the photo with the Pepsi can for scale?
What could possibly be written for the instrument; Rhino calls?

Yup. It's big.
And the keywork looks more saxophone than clarinet (maybe it's a funky modified Albert system?).

It does look like an albert system more than a boehm, doesn't it? I didn't even notice - I got hung up on the pepsi can mouthpiece. Anyway, someone up and bought it.

Surely this is not the place for political statements, but I certainly hope there is no way this thing could find its way into the hands of the Taliban.
Mildly concerned,
John

It looks like some sort of bizarre saxinet...(a bass sax and a contralto clarinet got drunk one night and went back to her place, and well, you know the rest...:P )

John Butler -
I've heard of the repair BB, but like Arthur, I don't know the URL. Could you please post it?
Thanks.
