Paul Dupre - anybody heard of him?

So a kid walks into my classroom during 1st period band (I teach music at a middle school) and hands me a clarinet. Says it's a donation. Cool. I ask for more info and he just kinda shrugs. (I asked the ladies in the office about it after school. They said some middle aged guy walked in, said he wanted to donate it to the school and left...no name or anything.)
Anyhow, the clarinet is stamped with "Paul DUPRE conservatorie Paris France". Made of wood. Appears to have silver keys. I'm certainly no expert, but I think it has a nice enough tone, though a few things need adjustment.

I've just not been able to find anything about this manufacturer. Has anyone heard of this guy?

Two short mentions in the archives but no history.

They show up on eBay frequesntly. Thereis at least 1 on auction now. Pst auctions have yielded $50-100. I assumed it was a intermediate french-made clarinet at best. mw

It was. I had a second hand DuPre when I was 13. The thing I remember most vividly is that there were no post locks and it was hard to keep in adjustment.

I have a DuPre Bass Clarinet (which a friend is borrowing). It is wood, and was completely rebuilt by Glen Johnston (he made it a double octave key horn and added a low D, which is activated by hitting the key with your foot!).

In spite of (or because of) all this, it is one of the best sounding Bass Clarinets anywhere. Glen used it to record the original Fantasia score and back when I was playing regularly, I often had comments from other players on the sound of the instrument.

I think Glen told me it was Chekoslovakian made. That's all I know. Hope it helps.

Michael
