 Wedding Music
Author: Francis Rizner

I have been asked to give a short concert prior to a wedding next month. My training for the past 45 years has been primarily classical and this particular wedding calls for music in the more popular vein. One of the requested pieces is, "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" (like Pete Fountain plays it) and I don't have a clue about where to go to find the accompaniment, tape, cd, or piano. I also would like to know where I might find other music suitable for this type wedding.
Any suggestions would surely be appreciated.

If you want to hear Pete play "A Closer Walk", it is on the CD "The Best of Pete Fountain" on MCA records. The CD is MCAD-4032. It should still be available..GBK

Thanks for the reply. I guess I wasn't clear enough, but I just need the accompaniment. I have a recording. I wish there was some way I could block out the clarinet, but then that might not be legal even if I could do it.
Thanks anyway.

Francis -
Number 380, "The Hymnal - for Worship & Celebration". Published by Word Music, Nashville, TN. Should be available in bookstores, libraries and most Protestant local churches.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that it's written in Bb, only eight measures and no chorus. Very easy to play by ear.

Thanks for the info. I may have to use it. Still, I have hopes for a slightly jazzier accompaniment.

Here is a long shot you might try, but you will have to get in touch with them to see if "A Closer Walk" is one of the tracks that they offer:

Try "One Hand, One Heart" from West Side Story, you prob have to transpose that from the vocal, perhaps in combo with "Somewhere" same show.

The Carpenters "We've Only Just Begun" has been done to death at weddings, but I'll bet it would sound great on clar. Find it as sheet music, in a 70s collection or maybe in a fake book.

There's a Hal Hopson setting of 1 Cor 13 in the 1989 Meth Hymnal (the title escapes me) that has a great melody.

Try "Wind Beneath My Wings."

How about "Sabath Prayer" from Fiddler on the Roof (and even the more obvious("Sunrise, Sunset.")

The John Rutter "Galec Blessing" its SATB, play the Sop part which is the "running" part.

If you have a singer available, the Don Besig "Come Follow Me" has a flute obligato that sounds great on clar. (I've done it in church.) It needs to be transposed, but is easy. The piece is SATB, but a soloist just does the sop. line.

A ways back someone else on this board recomended the "Pie Jesu" from the Faure Requiem which is just beautiful. Its written as a sop solo. Branford Marsallis has recorded this on Alto Sax, just beautiful.

What are they using for a march, my wife went down the aisle to the wedding march from Sound of Music, available on sheet music for Organ.

Jim,
Thanks so much for all the info. I'm sure I'll use some of your suggestions. All I have to do now is find the sheet music and I have some suggestions on that.
Thanks again.
Francis
