Hello Everyone,
While browsing through the topics in the bulletin board I came across many items initiated by my sometimes over-zealous student, Carmen. In his defense, he is a very bright and nice young man. But believe me, I will speak to him about some of the things he has posted on this board. However, I want to clear up a major misunderstanding that appeared under the heading of "super-mega practice schedule" concerning my role with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
I never have been a member of the CSO. I have played extra or substitute with them frequently for a number of years now, and last season was the permanant substitute 2nd player during Greg Smith's sabbatical leave. He is back full-time now. I have never presumed the second position to be anyone's other than Greg's, and have never made any comment about auditioning for this position as it has not been and will not be open while Greg Smith desires to keep it. Furthermore, my position in the CSO last year had nothing to do with Lawrie Bloom, who played most of the season despite fighting a battle with cancer, and who is (thankfully) doing well now.
I have great respect for the four members of the CSO section, I am honored that they choose to use me as an extra, I had a great year last year playing 2nd, but I welcome Greg back to his position after what was, I'm sure, a fruitful year for him.
I realize it is easy for information to get mixed-up in translation. This is a great example of the electronic version of the old "telephone" game. I hope that this clears things up.

I repost my reply (for good measure) to an earlier thread entitled "super mega practice schedule" by Carmen:
"As some of you know from my previous posts here, I have been on a 9 month sabbatical from my already 17 years as second desk clarinetist with Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I have returned permanently now to the orchestra after much solo concertising and teaching in various parts of the world and of course plan to have a continued long and happy life with the orchestra."
"One of the problems with second hand information of any sort is that much more often than not, the information is incorrect. That being the nature of the beast, it makes sense that it is probably best for everyone not to rely on or repeat it - especially in a public forum."

Julie an Gregory, please keep us up to date on the substitue needs of the struggleing CSO clarinet section. I stand ready at a minutes notice (if Carmen or anyone else will not answer "the call") to grab my set of Concertos and bail you guys out. Gratis, if funds are runnig low (I would probably pay you for the opportunity, if I could sit next to LC) Just so I don't have to sit in front of your equally challenged brass section. (well, maybe even if H was playing right into my ear) OK, so i'm desparate--and also just trying to inject a bit of friendly humor with regards to this whole situation. The CSO is the greatist, as we all know and those that get to play regularily or sit in are also the best--I'm just an shameless "Wananbe" (and admiror) Good Clarineting, Y'All (and drop in on this board more often)

Isn't there are prescription for the Izzo condition?
I have said it before, there is NO forum that I know of where plonkers (like me!) can so freely interact with the Big Dogs (who are uniformly gracious) for free.
It is such a joy to have pros like Julie, Greg and MC - programmer so willingly give of their expertise in dealing with this maddening instrument.
I think what most of us B.O.F. object to is abusing our webmaster, who's an all-around decent guy (who has kiddie hassles of his own to deal with, at home).
I'm thrilled to see the community rally in defense of what is, after all, grati$.

I'm right there with William above. Although I'm very glad Mr. Bloom is on the road to recovery, I am sitting by the phone, ready for a call to sub for him on a moment's notice (so he can have a well-deserved vacation). I'm sitting, waiting by the phone................................................. .........................waiting.............................................still waiting....................................
