HELP!
I'm in need of inspiration. I'm about to start my final degree year and I need an amazing piece of clarinet music to inspire to work hard for my final recital. Any ideas?
Thanks

What pieces have you already studied (performed)?

The Finzi Concerto! It's not too popular, but it's one of my absolute favorites; it's so beautiful. I suppose it may be more popular across the pond than it is in the US, but I don't know any other students that have ever studied it and it's worth all the work. I've never gotten tired of it.

Have you considered the "Clarinet Sonata w/Piano" by David Baker?

I love finzi! Not many people know it, but I've got a friend who's working on it, she sounds awesome. umm...here's some of my favorites, though I don't know what you've played already: debussy premiere rhapsody, poulenc sonata, bernstein sonata, copland concerto, stravinsky 3 pieces, osborne rhapsody, all good! hope you havn't worked on them all, they're pretty "classic" clarinet pieces, but so good. good luck!

The CLARINET CONCERTO by Bozza. Mvts 1 & 3 are rhythmic, technically challenging and fun to play. Mvt. 2 is smooth and beautiful.
SONATA for Clarinet and Piano, by Copland. Larry Combs has a great recording of this on the market. Three mvts. of clarinet elegance.
For diverison and pure fun, BENNY'S GIG, by Morton Gould. A duet for string bass and Bb clarinet. Jazzy and lyrical--in eight short movements.
Good Clarineting!!

My problem is more that I've listened to, and played through, lots of music and I feel like I need something I haven't ever heard or looked at before. I've played / performed most well-known clarinet pieces - Weber's concs and concertino, Mozart's concerto, Cooke, Arnold, Bax, Poulenc, Finzi, Howells, Schumann, Debussy, Spohr, Milhaud... the list could go on. However, I know very little about more recent works for clarinet. I'm looking for cl+pno works for my final recital, although I suppose variety could come in the form of a third instrument such as soprano voice... thanks for the idea!

Solo de concours by Messager (cl+piano)
A great show off piece, you need to have very strong techinque for that.
3 Studies (Etudes) on Themes of Gershwin by Paul Harvey (solo cl)Fun pieces based on "I Got rythm" Summertime" and one more that I forgot , great fun!
Hommage a de Falla by Bela Kovacs (great great piece solo cl)
part of a set of tributes to famous composer this one is to me the flashiest and most musical. A lot of fun to hear and play.
Moonflowers, baby!; a jazz essay by Kupferman
Lots of fun bending notes, flutter tonguing quite musical too...
There are also
Three Miniatures by Penderecki (cl+piano)
Sonata by John Cage.
Of course Nielsen concerto reduction for piano, snare drums and cl.
If you have not played the Copland's then it's a must!
I hope this helps, have fun!

I know you said you were looking for something new, but if you haven't played the Stravinsky Three Pieces, you might want to consider them. I found the second piece to be very challenging and the third to be quite fun.
