Although they may sound like a heavy rock group, this is probalby the best sax ensemble i have ever heard!!!! It has a complete family, sopranio, soprano, alto, tenor, bari, bass, and yes, contra bass! it has some of the best pictures of the contra bass i have ever seen. I plan to buy one of their CD's, visit their website at www.nuclearwhales.com
Sorry if this was a little off topic, but when anyone finds good pics of a contra bass, it is a rare occasion and should be shared!

Hey, go to a performance. The guy who plays that horn (it is about 10 feet long) dances and jumps all over the stage while playing... and sounding great (the thing weighs at least 50 lbs!). It take tons of air and just sounds cool! They do all their own arrangements and sell some on the website. They are based out of San Francisco and are a quality group... no clarinets however! They will sell their arrangements if you happen to have a Contra Bass and Bass sax in your ensemble!
They have some audio files on their website which you can listen to. If memory serves they also list where they are performing. If they do make it a point to go hear them.
I got asked today to go and fill in on second alto in a college jazz band (I usually play lead in big bands, but the lead tenor I usually play with was doing the lead alto and wanted to fill the section). So I show up and the kid that used to play the stand had kept the music and didn't show up. So I faked it a bit then pulled out the 2nd (4th for you jazz heads) tenor book and grabbed my R13. I started having one of the best times I have ever had in a jazz group just playing those licks on the clarinet up an octave from where they were written. The director liked it, in fact it gave such a neat sound to the jazz group that he asked me to bring the clarinet when I come back next week with the alto again. He wants to make that a regular part of the sound.
I have heard some folks mention that the clarinet isn't used much for jazz, but wow, what an interesting sound it adds. I wouldn't be surprised to hear it a lot more in jazz in the future, it has a nice harmony sound. Clarinet isn't just for solos anymore!

lol. If I bought my clarinet to jazz band, the really bad bari sax player would drown me out!!!

Anyone heard of The Gadflys? they are an Australian light rock group, and some of their songs include a clarinet (a real one, not a synthesised one).

Of course, aren't there only a handful of extant contrabass saxes?

This instrument has the range of a "paperclip" BBb contrabass, but is twice the mass, more like an <a href="http://www.contrabass.com/pages/octobass.html">octocontrabass clarient</a>.

Also the famed Whales group hs the feature of a gathering of over 1000 saxophones on the great wall of China......I hope someone is bringing their ear plugs!!!
