"HELP!! Found an old one, what do I have?&quo

I picked up an old metal clarinet at a thrift store and I can't figure out just what I have. It is silver
and has the marking "Manhattan" stamped on the bell with a skyline. The case looks as old as the instrument. This is basically a three piece unit with the main body of it being one piece, the mouth piece and then the connector/tuning piece. If anyone can help me out with this I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Probably a beginner horn at the time - they turn up under lots of uncommon names. Interestingly enough, I just ran across a mouthpiece on a horn I was looking at with the same name and skyline.

Metal horns were at one time quite popular for student and marching band use.

It is highly unlikely that the instrument is silver or silver plated. It is probably nickel plating over brass.

AND, it highly unlikely that it has any significant value, except to an owner for whom it might be a "prized possession" for it's sound. The latter is unlikely as well, as these metal clarinets, by & large, were (at the least, a part of) the cause for many a would-be Clarinetist to quit! They can make a great ornament to keep around the house or office. I use parts of clarinets as paperweights on my desk. Works for me. Best, mw

Many of my customers will use old clarinets like this one as repair projects. You might want to fix it up for the knowledge gained in taking on such a project!

After getting it fixed up and playable, I recomend trying as many different mouthpieces as posible along with a good tuner. Adjusting key/pad heights may help too. Most metal clarinets were student models starting from pure crud to not too bad. Some decent and pro models were made too. Most had horrible mouthpieces and were played by students with undeveloped embouchures. They got a bad reputation. But with a little experimenting you can correct a few things here and there and it will sound better. As for the finnish, some were brass laquered like a sax, some were nickel plated, some silver plated. One of mine (an Olds), looks like nickel but won't shine up even with Simichrome polish. Probably made from scrap metal found behind Hanger 57.
