Hi! I have a buffet clarinet. You know how the inside of the case is not exactly red but it is kind of I don't know, brick red/maroon. Well, I've been looking for a silk swab to match the inside. I got a red one but it is the really really like BRIGHT red kind, I really don't like it! One of my oboe friends has a burgendy/maroon colored one but she bought it from a oboe speciality place on line... *sigh* Thanks!

I've been looking for different swabs too! I wish they made ones with neat patterns and designes on them.....I am going to try to make one myself as soon as I find a silk that I like.
Anyways, I've never had one myself, so I don't know how well it will match the inside of the case, but Hodge swabs come in a burgundy color.

OK dudes and dudettes!
Go to the nicest clothing store in town, one that sells fine suits and dresses for business for women or go to a boutique of artsy-handmade clothing, like a Art Guild show or store. Go in and look at the fine silk scarves they sell. Chances they will have a nice scarf in a decent pattern you might like or may be able to custom make one for you and your taste. They might also have the perfect solid color scarf you crave.
These scarves will probably come in several sizes...some long and narrow, others square, others rectangular. They will also be hemmed. FINALLY....they will be EXPENSIVE...unless you get them on sale or someone else pays for it for you. You could also try looking in a second-hand store for scarves. Problem here is that often times, previous owners have ripped off the label telling if it is solid silk.
Lastly, you could try phoning a fabric store, asking them for real silk material in smooth, not nubby, texture. You could purchase 1/4 yard, cut it in half width-wise, and sell one piece to a friend. This material is, of course, unhemmed, so you would have to hem it. You could also purchase MICROFIBER material. This stuff is new, of same texture as silk, never wrinkles, and wicks away moisture.
Just attach the string with weight from an old cotton swab onto one corner by hand-stitching it. Ask your home economics teacher for help if your school still has one...
PLEASE, do NOT use any RIT dye on your cloth that is inserted in your precious clarinet!!!! This dye is a mixture of several different dyes, meant to be used on a wide variety of material types. Its color range is limited and produces faded color, often times coming out more and more in the wash. Yup...this stuff will come off in your instrument and you will be swabbing it into the wood each time you use your RIT-dyed swab. Dye is Hazardous to your health if inhaled or swallowed and we're talking about using it on a swab that is placed in an instruement you place in your mouth!!! DON'T GO THERE!!!

Silk? For a swab? Seems to me that silk would make a pretty sorry swab. A better choice would be something far more absorbent, like cotton or chamois. Silk would leave more slobbers than it would absorb.

Silk is probably the most popular swab material. It spreads the moisture very evenly and thinly so that the clarinet dries very quickly. It doesn't snag near as much as cotton. It does absorb moisture, too.
