Hi..I have an audition in this Saturday for the Senior Rigional Orchestra. This is my first audition for an orchestra.. I'm getting so nervious when I go up to judge and my fingers don't work when they ask me to play... I have to play Rose Etudes # 13 and I'm so worried because I really have to be able to control my embouchure to express the various dynamic levels. My teacher tought me where should I breath and slow down. Is there any more tips on playing the Rose Etudes? I'll try to relax as much as I can at the audition. Thank you

Best of luck... Just don't do anything stupid! like play in the wrong key. If you miss a note, GO ON!!!

One of my strategies in dealing with nerves is to take time to adjust the music stand--even if it doesn't particuarly need it--and make certain my music is in order, even if it was "in order" before coming on stage. Minute, last second reed adjustments may also help. Then, wet the reed, make certain no excess moisture is behind the reed (suck it in), take a deep breath or two, and play with the attitude that you are the best clarinetist in the world and that you are actually "auditioning" the judges but giving them an auditory clinic on how the clarinet should be played. Be relaxed, but take control of your "space" and your performance by focusing one the music and playing musically and confidently. And, if you do have momentary crisis (wrong note, squeek, etc), forget it immediately and continue as if nothing unmusical happened. And, when you finish playing, smile confidently as if you were most pleased with how your performance went.
Before you actually play the real audition, it might help for you to practice auditioning in front of some of your friends or family. Good luck and Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure you'll do your best, Won Kim. Otherwise, you wouldn't be there. William's advice is very good for ALL of us. Go there with a positive attitude and a confident smile and play for the judges the way clarinet music should be played, as only YOU can, because you love playing. That's half of it. Remember to smile when you finish. That's the other half :]
