I have two pieces of Dampit. A paper, like a litmus paper, came to know relative humidity. When RH becomes below 40%, it is must, they say.

I live in Long Island N.Y. Why do you use a humidifier. When I bought my R-13 on the Island the dealer said nothing to me about a humidifier. Can the humidity or lack thereof damage the horn?

Are you using the heating system yet? It's not so much the cold air that is dry as it is heated (formerly) cold air. As air is heated its capacity to carry moisture increases, therefore a constant moisture content results in lower humidity.
Anyway, this "cold" snap on the mid Atlantic coast shouldn't last much longer. (High in NJ tomorrow is forecast for 78.) The last 3 days have been more like mid October.
Stuart, all wood, whether in a clarinet, a hardwood floor, a door, furniture etc will change moisture content along with its surrondings. This is due to the cellular structure of trees. This results in a change in the dimentions of the wood (accross the grain) and can also result in cracks (a woodworker calls them "checks") developing. These can add "character" in floors, but are a disaster in clarinets. Last November I hung a door in a house at the Jersey shore as part of a remodel job I was doing. Knowing that the heat was on, I allowed what I thought was a generous clearance between the door and jamb. I was back in mid June to take a cut on the door as it was then 1/8 inch larger than the opening!

Stuart, it's pronounced as one word ... Lon-GI-land ! (I was born in Brooklyn & raised on da South Shore of Lon-GI-land) I use a Dual Thermometer/Humidity Gauge I bought at Sears for about $12-15. It's my "anchor" ! mw
