I have an old guitar gig bag from when i was an aspirering (sp) guitarist. (or at least to my grandma.) Well, i was wondering.... I put my bass with the body put together and the bell attached and it fits wonderfully, note that it is /_ sort of shape, or in words really narrow on one end and gets wider on the way down but stays the same on the other. It doesn't bed any keys and it is ALOT lighter than my previous case... (note i am keeping the neck and mouthpiece in a seperate compartment.
Is this paticulary bad for my clarinet? if so should i sacrifice a little well-being for comfort?

As a sax player who USED to use gig bags, I certainly vote against it. The body and keywork of the bass clarinet are far more delicate than an alto sax. And my alto certainly took some hits and went out of adjustment more frequently that it does now in a hard case. Go with the extra weight. You bass clarinet will love you for it...

I also agree...DON'T USE A GIG BAG!
As one sax repair tech once told me: "The invention of gig bags has kept me in business".
Don't spend needless money on repairs that can be avoided...use a real case.

I would not put the bass clarinet in a gig bag. Just keep it in the hard case. The bass clarinet and the case is not really that heavy when you put it next to a tenor or bari sax. It's a little extra weight but the instrument will be a lot safer.

Gig bags BAD! I used to carry my old mid-50's Buescher bari sax to jobs in a gig bag, and half the time I'd arrive and the horn would have developed some leaks from keys being bent while the horn was being transported --- and I was always careful not to bang the horn around. Bite the bullet, and get a hard case for the bigger instruments (bass clarinet and bigger, I'd say). The smaller instruments can generally be carried around in a bag if you're careful all the time, but I wouldn't even consider carrying a larger instrument in a gig bag anymore.

Yes, I've soldered on some broken posts on saxes due to use of "gig bags". I wouldn't use one under any circumstances but will only use hard shell cases. Good luck!!
