 Evolution reeds

when rico says their evolution reeds are unfiled... what exactly does this mean?

That basically means that they dont have a portion of the bark filed off at the tail end of the reed's vamp. In other words....a "Filed" reed will look like a Vandoren with the straight line of bark at the end of the vamp of the reed. Un-filed reeds look more like, La Voz, Zonda, and Mitchel Lurie reeds where the bark of the reed follows the cut of the vamp. This "filing" supposedly allows for more vibration of the reed, expically in the lower end of the vibrations. I"m not an expert on what the advantage is to filing or not filing, but both styles are out there, and it is up toyou to test both styles to find what works best for you.

I agree with Aaron, only problem is its always been hard to test to see if Filed reeds were actually any better, because every manufacturer is different. I think at one point someone said they were going to buy an unfiled evolution and then file it down, to see which way played better, but I don't know if he ever did it.
