I am going to inter my Bb saprano and a bass to try to get into midstate and I'm just wondering the easiest way to switch. I know they are the same in alot of ways but I need to know if there is before I switch.

The only thing you have to worry about really is the mouthpiece.. your reeds will tend to be oh, a whole strength softer than your B flat Soprano Reeds because the mouthpiece is obviously considerably bigger, that and the keys are much bigger but that wasn't that big of a problem. I use a 3 1/2 (vandoren)for my soprano clarinet(crystal, pomarico, closed tip), and i'm thinking of renting a bass clarinet, which strenght should i use(i was thinking of buying the rico royal) any suggestions???????(anything WILL help!)

Reed strength depends entirely on the mouthpiece, not the horn. I do prefer a more open mouthpiece on the bass, but it is only one half grade softer, a 2 1/2 on a Bay MO-M. I play a 3 on soprano, on a Bay MO-L and a 3 1/2 on the Gregory Smith 1+. If I were playing on most other bass mouthpieces I have tried I would be playing a 3 or 3 1/2 reed, or the same as soprano. I just like the resonance, full sound, and control of the Bay bass M.P.

Remember on a Bass Clarinet Tone is the most important thing, technique takes a 2nd base. I suggest you use La Voz reeds, in my opinion those have been the best reeds I've used (I was all-state contra player my senior year in HS using La Voz Mediums :P )... Generally my idea for reed strength is the lower you go, the softer the reed but usually only by 1/2 as you go down. For Filipe I warn you... rentals are horrible. They will give you a cheap Bundy or Vito, that has been abused for years. Mouthpeice wise, I usually always used a Selmer C* on my Contra, and a cheap Vito mpc that I got for $5 for my Bass. The Vito all I Can tell you about it is it was an open mpc, that worked really good surprisingly. Anyway I hope that this helps you people out.
