I have just been offered the opportunity to purchase a brand knew Buffet "Prestige" Bass Clarinet. The price on the horn is US$4,500. As I'm not really up on the prices of Bass clarinets, can someone tell me if they think I have I good deal.
I have played the horn and it is beautiful, with a rich warm sound. I was hoping someone could also tell me the pros/cons of Buffet over a Selmer or even a Leblanc.
Ta,
Andy

Andy,
That sounds like a good deal. I have seen some basses w/c up to 6-7 thousands.

Visit the International Music Suppliers (www.intlmusicalsuppliers.com) and the Woodwind and Brasswind (www.woodwindbrasswind.com) websites to get a comparison on prices. These two companies usually have the best prices. $4500 sounds comparable to what I paid.

WW/BW has the 1193 at $4995 (my catalogue might be a little out of date). So $4500 is a great deal if it's a player.

Be sure it really is the latest model. Buffet changed the instrument 2-3 (?) years ago WITHOUT changing the model number.

I have a Low C on trial here. It;s a used horn. I played it and it's an amazing horn and plays beatifully. It is though a few years old, about 5. What are the things about this horn that caused Buffet to redesign the keywork? This horn works very well, i'm just interested in the reasoning behind the change??
