Hello!
I bought a Pedler Co. Steel Clarinet a few years ago, and I would like to find out some more about it. It came with all original accesories (Mouthpiece, ligature, mouthpiece adapter, lyre, SWAB). Can anyone tell me anything about the Pedler Co.? The S/N on the instrument is 28272, and it is supposedly circa 1922.

Interesting. Your new horn sounds like the same vintage as one that was purchased for me to learn on when I was in 4th or 5th grade. The serial number on my instrument is 29153 and I keep it in playing condition as a backup horn.
Do a search on this web site as Mark C. suggests. The Pedler Co. has an interesting history. You will also find that they manufactured alto and bass clarinets as well. Some instruments are well regarded while others are considered to be student quality only. Like most metal clarinets, they do not have a great monetary value. Mine, however, is invaluable due to my emotional attachment.

The only steel is in the screws & springs. The rest is silver plated over brass or nickel. They made a lot of models, from student to pro. I don't think the accessories have any value (unless the mouthpiece is a desirable brand.) Throw away the swab and buy a replacement. Chances are it would only damage the horn. I have not seen a date list for Pedlers. Why do you think 1922? (Any accurate Pedler dates would be most interesting.)

Wouldn't the student models have been nickel plating over brass rather than silver plating?

Correct, Dee, I recall my electroplating course at MSC [1941] where we became acquainted with the current auto bumper plating technology practiced by Ternstedt [a division of GM] {I considered trying to go to work for them!!}. Over steel [brass should be similar] we put on a "flash coat" of copper, followed by BRIGHT nickel [ I dont recall the chemistry!], followed by chromium to have the best results. I should think that C-B's Silva-Bet and other of the good quality cl's might well be silver plated [we did Ag plating from a NaCyanide bath !!!], with instrsuctions for care for preventing tarnishing. Ah, memories! I have a couple of Pedler woods [1920-30's] reasonably good ! Don
