 Kanter Mouthpiece

No doubt, bound to command a high price. I have received inquiries recently offering to pay as much as $800 for ANY (used) model of Kanter's mouthpieces. Many jazz players look for the MORE open facings. Caveat emptor. (& I don't understand this type stuff ... sure I can see a premium)

I don't think I would ever pay $800.00 for a mpc. I have studied with Jim's dad Ben Kanter. Jim's mpc are very good.

Some time back a mouthpiece went on eBay auction for $1600. Spending money is all about opportunity cost & value. Obviously, not everybody makes the same JUDGEMENT in moneysworth. That's the spice of life, that none of us think EXACTLY alike. mw

Don, your statement seems very subjective. What's your authority for the $150 ???Did that come from Benade or Langenus, adjusted for inflation? : ) mw

Actually he (Kanter) still makes a few of them, but not for sale, although, my teacher, who studied with him, got lucky and bought about 5 for around $300 each last year. (I think he's keeping all of them.)

Brenda, YES, I have played a Kanter model 715. I get to play a fair number of old, used mouthpieces. I am afraid that it didn't just jump out & grab me in a particular way. However, I have played several Kaspar Cicero & had much the same reaction. I always think think that I probably missed something when this happens or that I didn't allow enough time for my evaluation or "getting used" to the different setup. I am careful about using new reeds & fitting the proper reed strength to the different blank & whatnot. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. mw

As a former student of Ben Kanter, Jim's dad, I went to Ben's funeral a couple of years ago. Jim Kanter at that time commented that he did not have enough time to produce mouthpieces for sale. The only mouthpiece that I looked at seemed to have a very flat table, not concave that I would normally expect. It played pretty good. Ben was playing well up to his passing at 93.

Jim's new mouthpiece's are great if you can get one. He's using Zinners now and actually making them play, unlike some makers out there...

The interesting thing about all of this which one finds so humorous is the fact in the mid 80s there were so many great mouthpiecesw around to choose from and now everyone is in a mad scramble to find something decent. In point order a)older workmanship is the fact quality and workmanship were definitely higher. Many babble on about how great the Kaspars are but remember the Cheldville's the Blayman's, the O'Brien's and Oppermans are all the stuff of legend. What made James Kanter so fine is that he reallly tried to design a mouthpiece which suited the individual needs of the artist in question. Sadly people like myself have only a few of these models left and personally I have not had the great success in looking for something "better". A long look through the lists of makers and very few match or meet up with the Kaspars and Kanters. the two Kanter models I use are the A facings personally made for me. The ser. no.s are 640 1040 and they play as well now as they did new. Yes they are fading a bit but not as bad as some of my students models which are less than 5 years old. I have tried alot of stuff and would probably not desire too radical a tone change...that being said the cost of making a mouthpiece is about $330.00 US and cost is prohibitive to some people which is too bad.

Erratta: The cost of making a mouthpiece is $30.00 dollars not the amount stated above...everyone knows this stuff I thought.
