Dear fellow Sneezers, I'm experiencing a problem which is sensitive to me and I'm wondering if any others have had to deal with it also. My problem, bluntly stated, is that my "chops" grow at a phenominal rate!! To say that this is distressing would be quite an understatement. I'm a restarter who has quit in the past because of this. And I'm only blowing on a #2 Legere reed!!! Perhaps this question is too personal to post but I trust my fellow sneezers. (I've tried a goatee...it looked pretty decent but I aged 30 years in a few weeks!) What makes it tough is that I get such a wonderful "natural high" feeling when I'm playing. Has anyone else had to deal with this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Dan

Are you referring to your teeth and lip muscles, cheek puffiness, or just what? "Chops" is a generic term which is sometimes rather difficult to understand. If you could be a little more specific maybe we could help you. One thought which might help. Some individuals are rather allergic or sensitive to the natural material in reeds and have a sensitivity reaction to them, thus causing their mouth area to break out or to swell. If this is what you are referring to you might try a "fibercane" reed which is quite good, responds well, and looks very similar to an actual reed.

Try one of those Legere reeds for a while and see what happens. If you can't find one right away, maybe a Rico plasti-coated reed might help a little till you do. The Legere is far better though and is totally synthetic.

This really sounds more like an allergic reaction than anything else. As others have suggested try an artificial reed for awhile. Also some people are allergic to nickel. So if you are using a standard metal ligature and you happen to touch it too much, that could be causing the problem. Try an inexpensive plastic one like the Luyben (screws go on the top of the mouthpiece not the reed side for this one).

keep the legere, but sharpen the other end and use it to scrape off the peach fuzz. (However, my general advice on hair is grow it while you got it.)
