 Crazy Clarinet Tales

What are some crazy stories you have involving the clarinet? Mine were shared to me by my teacher. The first was that a student had a plastic clarinet. They were so frustrated at not being able to make it play that he/she smashed it into a wall. The second was that a student decided that their instrument was dirty, and gave it a bath.

I faithfully gave my rental clarinet a futh bath WITH SOAP before every concert. I could never figure out why I had to replace the pads so often. :)

AHhhhhhh... never underestimate the power of a music teacher that explains the PROPER way to do things.

:):)

Never assume you have explained something fully...especially to elementary instrumental students. After telling one of my beginning clarinet groups about the importance and proper way to clean a clarinet mouthpiece, I noticed the following day that one of my students' mouthpieces looked horribly misshapen. After questioning the student, she finally revealed to me that her mom had put the mouthpiece in the dishwasher (full cycle) to sanitize it. Well...it did get clean!

Every time my elder brother plays clarinet, animals act extraordinarily.
A dog barks Wawooooooon. A crow caws. My cat runs away.
When I play my Soprano Sax in front of river, fishes hop up. This is true.

My clarinet hating cat, Sneakers(that's where I got my name) gets one of those "if looks could kill" on her face when I just get my clarinet case out and she begins to cry pathetically. When I actually start to play she bites me.

( : It's taken me about 3 years, but I've finally trained my dog Mouse to sing with me.....she especially likes it when I trill.....she can match a D above the staff almost perfectly! Working on the Boston terrier...he likes the chalumeau register : )

One day I raced from work, to the college for our concert, changed shirts, slapped my horn together and walked out on stage with the last of the other musicians. The first piece we played had no B naturals so everything seemed OK. The next piece had a special part for the 3rd clarinets where I was asked to play to augment that section. Everytime I went to play B nat. (middle staff), NUTHIN. It was noticable as I saw the professor look over to me at least a couple times. During some of the rests I poked over the horn and found nothing obviously wrong. When that piece was over I got to look a little further and found my old swab stuffed in the bell as my daughter had used it at school earlier that day. I was ragged about it for quite some time afterwards.

Unfortunately(?) this one is not my own experience - I read it in a music magazine. It was a danish jazz clarinetist who told about his first encounter with the instrument. Originally, he had played a bit of cornet, but liked the sound of the clarinet and got one. He couldn't get any sound from it, no matter how hard he tried. It took several weeks before he found out that to produce a sound, the clarinet had to be fitted with something that he did not know from the cornet: a reed.

After 13 years of listening to me practice, my dog is now deaf and seems not to mind the sound of a clarinet in the altisimo register. Time is the great equalizer.

I was in a music store back in the late seventies when women came in and said she was having trouble with her son's rental instrument and wanted a repairman to work on it.
When the clerk asked what the problem was the customer said, “well the band teacher said it’s cracked, so I need to have this little wooded part replaced”.
The sad part is that the kid had been playing on that reed for over eight months.

My cat is also a clarinet hater although she hates my guitars even more because they're bigger. She also bit me on the ankles a few times when I was playing. Now she just hides under the bed.

I was playing a chamber piece by Grisey in my new music ensemble, and was on the A clarinet for no less than three pages when the part was in Bb--and had no idea. (The piece is a bit atonal.) It didn't seem to make any difference, though, seeing that the conductor didn't even notice.

Last year at our Winter Concert, we were playing this Christmas song in Jazz band that required clarinet. So for that one song I was s'posed to play Cl. insted of alto sax. At the concert, after concert band played my director told us to hurry up and put our instruments away, so I did without thinking. Jazz band's up and it came time for that song, and...uh oh! I dont have my clarinet. I told my director and he sent someone from my section to bring it to me, well they brought the wrong instrument. I had no choice but to play someone elses instrument. It was horrible! The reed was still wet from their saliva, it was disgusting. I'm still grossed out...

OK I have 2. I was in the AIT in the Army in Little Creek and we were performing in a commissioning ceremony in a very old theatre on the base. We were playing Rocky Point Holiday by Ron Nelson and the ceiling over our heads was falling in pieces on us. I was playing Eb and I still have part of the ceiling in my case that I kept for a souvenir.

Another pet story....I have 4 parrots, 2 of them are cockatoos and talk. Dickens, my bare eyed yells Mommy and Help when I practice especially Eeffer. LOL

Luanne :o)

hmmm how's this? when i first starteed playing (6thgrade) i couldn't get out a sound for two weeks, until i figured out that my tongue is of some use when it is near the reed. in eigth grade i had to run to class, so i was gasping during my chair audition - and recieved first chair! - then i got a tutor, who promptly told me that my embrochure was horrible, and in three years i had not known what tounging was. after a month with him i got third chair all-county (what wonders private teachers can do - 7th grade i was so horrible i didn't bother to try out!) and i moved to fairfax county, and realized how bad (almost) everyone had been, including myself - i didn't even get into the lower district band ! of course i plan to fix that this year...
