Hi,
I have a quetion about V-12 reeds. I wanted to try some and I went to a shop and bought a couple of them. I didn`t want to buy a whole box, so I bought only five. But I tried them at home, and found out that there weren`t any any differences from my own traditional reeds. Is there a mark on a V12 that is different from a traditional? I get a feeling that I got the wrong reeds.

V-12's come in a grayish box that say V-12 on them, but the reeds themselves do not say V-12 on them, they just have the Vandoren stamp on them.

I just looked at some of each and, on the ones I looked at, the markings were identical. However, the V12's are made from thicker blanks so, if you set a V12 next to a "traditional," and look at them from the butt end, the V12 should look noticeably thicker. I've never been able to tell much difference between the two brands except that the V12's are about a 1/4 to 1/2 strength lighter (i.e., a 4 V12 is usually about equivalent to a traditional 3 1/2, allowing for Vandoren's within-box variation). That's why I use traditionals and save alot of money. (But it's all a matter of personal preference. On the box I have, which came with a used clarinet I bought, after an IMHO ego-oriented manipulative comment that V12's are for "advanced" players) Vandoren notes that V12's are designed for long-facing mouthpieces. If your mouthpiece has a medium to short facing length, that may also explain why you don't notice an improvement.)
