Are there any printed legitimate notations of Shaw solos, I am a beginner with an as yet not well developed ear and would like to play some of his stuff, play along with Artie..... even though I obviously can't get, indeed will never get his intonation?

P.S. I have read most of the stuff on the concerto for clarinet but that is porabably ayear away for me still.

I've seen a hand written manuscript for Shaw's "Star Dust" (wish now I'd made a copy :[ It's a tedious process to get anything down by dictation; takes a lot of dedication, practicepracticepractice and (developed) skill. I would guess that someone has done it by now. Nothing wrong with play-along with anybody, in my opinion. You can learn a lot that way.

I've got a copy of his Clarinet Method published by Robbins Music Corporation printed in 1941 - I don't know if its still available for purchase, but in the back of it are 6 pieces with piano accompaniment "transcribed from records of his band for the purpose of enabling the student to compare the written notes with the recorded version". They are: I'm coming virginia, Back bay shuffle, Rose room, My Blue Heaven, Dr livingston i presume, and Copenhagen. Actually the whole method is quite interesting to go through and a while ago i practiced the "scales" as part of my practice for a few weeks (although i can't play improvised jazz - only stuff thats written on paper:-))(Oh and also if you get a chance to use David gornston's book on modern clarinet technique thats got some really great ideas on scales that are really fun to do too for a bit of variety - sorry i'm waffling on). Anyways, if you ever come up to Brissie (ie to the con up here) make sure to email me about getting some photocopies as i think the book may be out of print.

Perhaps his most popular record was "Begin the Beguine". I have an old 78 of it and another [will look], and still can recall most of his licks, but dont make the gliss as well as he did!! Don

I believe there's a Jazz Band arrangement for "Begin the Beguine," recently published, that has the solo written out. It seems to follow my recording of Artie's solo. A search at J. W. Pepper (they have an online catalogue) should turn it up. It's in G concert, I think.
