 band uniform!!!
Author: Francesca

Ok, this isn't exactly clarinet related, but it is vital to my surviving to see next week. I (stupidly) forgot to hand up my band uniform and now it's really wrinkled. I have a game tomorrow and I don't know what to do. Keep in mind, this is a college marching band, and it's our first home game. ie. We need to look our very best. Any suggestions on how to make the uniform presentable? I didn't think you could iron wool, but correct me if I'm wrong. Getting a different one isn't an option, BTW. Thanks!

There should be a "wool" setting on your iron, between synthetic and cotton. Use lots of stem and an ironing cloth (a dish towel) between the iron and the wool so the wool won't get a sheen. The wrinkles will come out pretty easily.

Maybe you can take it somewhere where you can just get it pressed. I've really liked the Men's Wearhouse - they press my dress slacks for free. I don't know about band uniforms, but they can do the job for you and probably do it a lot better than you can by yourself :^). Be sure to get express service!

hang your uniform in the bathroom, close the door and run the shower on hot for about 20 minutes. This should 'steam' most of the wrinkles out. Clarification...don't put your uniform in the shower, just hang it on the towel rod or something. If this doesn't work completely you can iron wool, but I would recommend you put a damp hand towel between the fabric and the iron. I don't remember where I picked up these tips but they really do work. Good luck!

Could you maybe try that wrinkle remover? I think downy makes it.. but I'm not sure how it would be on wool. Saved me on more than one occasion, though. Or if you have time, drop it off at a dry cleaners? they can usually do stuff within a day, and it's never terribly expensive.

Ok I have been in that predicament MANY times. Take your uniform..and put it in the dryer for about 10-15 minutes..and presto. You won't have like pleats in the legs, but it will not be wrinkled.

I would NOT put that uniform in the dryer! Take it to the dry cleaners and get it pressed. It may seem like a hassle, but at least then you'll always feel like hanging it up isn't one.

Another ironing trick is to turn the piece of clothing inside out and iron the underside. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the sheen on the outside. I don't know if this works with a lined piece of clothing, however.

Thanks for all the help! I ended up borrowing an iron and using a towel to take most of the heat. The uniform looked good enough to perform in. I had tried the downey wrinkle remover, but that works best on thinner fabrics. I'll those suggestion in mind if this happens again. Currently, my uniform is hanging in my closet, where it should be.
