I auditioned for the first time for college concert bands last week, and they put the results up this morning (I skipped a class to be there when they posted them)...and me, the lowly freshman clarinet/bass clarinet player, got into the Symphony Band playing bass. I rule. Actually theres practically no competition for me, but its still pretty cool. Symphony is almost all upperclassmen, a lot of grad students, and almost all music majors (Well, i am a music major anyway). So i'm all excited. I even called my high school band director and private teacher (theyre the same person) after I found out this morning. I was definately excited :o) And the music will be HARD..i cant wait. No more oom-pah parts. I hope.
Also had my first lesson today....I take from the TA this year, not the prof. what I have to do: completely re-learn how to tongue, change how i breath, change how i hold the horn and my head, change my hand position, change how i sit, change how my throat moves when i tongue and its not supposed to...and a whole lot of other things. But the TA is really nice, and I'm a lot less intimidated with her than i would be with the prof. So I have a ton of work to do, in this 2 hours a day I'm supposed to be practicing (In addition to actually going to class and ensembles, and marching band, and homework, and everything else. So much for my social life i guess.) Yes, I know, 2 hours a day is probably NOTHING to most of you...but this is a state university :o)
anyway....

Congratulations, Ashley! And have lots of fun along with the hard work.
By the way, I've read this board for nearly a year, but this is my first e-mail. Your posts, Ashley, have given me more than a few smiles. Ahhh, the enthusiasm of youth!

Good Job!
Welcome to the pathetic lifestyle of a college music major.

Well, Mark, just be glad you didn't say "My son had a fun couple of freshman years there..."
