Does anybody here have experience with the Amati standard alto sax model? Normal intonation and quality questions, but additionally, I'm thinking of the black lacquered one and wonder how well the lacquer holds up and how it looks when the lacquer gets old.

I don't know how they effect the sound, but laquer in general freaks me out. I always like a sax sound more out of an older, unlaqured (how do you spell it?) horn. Especialy on alto when your already on the bright side of tone. My friend just picked up an old Martin that he loves for just 800 bucks from a highly reputable dealer in Berkeley. He sounds soooo much better on that then he did his $2000 Yamaha classical speed machine.
I guess it's up to you. Who do you want to sound like?
Johnny Hodges, Parker, Threadgill, Cannonball, Thomas Chapin, Maceo Parker, ......or.....(insert blood curdling screams): Kenny G.
Not that lacker (uh) equals pop sax, but from what I've seen, lack of lakkre provides the nicest sound.
Let me know what you find out, if I ever get some cash saved, my next buy is a sax. - Stuart

I have two altos--a Mk6 and a Conn 6M. Both are lacquered horns. The Selmer plays very bright and can be positively piercing with the right mouthpiece. The Conn is *very* different. It has a much more mellow sound, even with the same mouthpiece. Of course, the mouthpiece has a *lot* to do with the sound, but i would offer that the presence of lacquer does not in itself make a sax bright (or dull or dark or semi-transparent, even).
