What are some reccomendations on Eb soprano mouthpieces? We are purchasing a new Buffet Eb RC, all the works. I"m looking for a mouthpiece that has a sweet tone, but still has controll and ease of articulation in the high registers. I''m using a Richard Hawkins Eb mpc at the moment, it has wonderful tone for most of the range of the instrument, but after D6( this using sneezy's notation...) the tone spreads and gets shrill. Otherwise it's a great mouthpiece.
I know about trying all the mouthpieces available to find the best one that works for me, blah blah blah, I'm just asking what do the pro's play on in the orchestras? WHat does Jan Bruce-Yeh play, etc. I'm looking for any advice.
so what are the HOT brands out there??????

You could look into Eb mouthpieces of makers like Pyne, Greg Smith and Viotto. Also the Fobes Nova Eb has a good reputation I think. I have tried the Viotto and Fobes Eb mouthpieces, but I prefer my B44.

Both Greg Smith's and Clark Fobes' "San Francisco" Eb mouthpieces are fine mouthpieces. I don't have any experience with Pyne or the others.
Tom LeGrand of the Houston Symphony uses a Kaspar on permenant loan from my teacher, and he sounds great. I also prefer my Kaspar over the Greg Smith i sold to my teacher.
I've heard alot of people that were happy with the Vandoren B44, but i've never been a fan of mass produced mouthpieces like the Vandorens, Selmers, etc.
I'm not sure where you live, but if you're anywhere in/near New York state, i would give Dan Johnston a call. He set me up with a fine Bb mouthpiece at the convention that i like almost as much as my Kaspar. I didn't even think to ask him about an Eb mouthpiece while i was there. Now i'm kicking myself because he may not ever be at another convention, and i don't see myself going to New York anytime soon.

Bay, Fobes, Hite & (older) Selmer * are the E-fer mouthpieces that I have used. They are all quite good. Having played a Greg Smith B-fer mouthpiece, I have no question his E-fer would probably be great, too. The BAY is hard to beat (and awfully expensive, too!) mw

HI,
After trying several Eb mouthpieces including Selmer, Vandoren etc, I found that my Morgan R06 works very well on a Brannenized Selmer Eb. The sound is rich, dark and very controlled. I would try several Morgans though as each is just a little different but I highly recommend them.

The best sounding Eb mp I've tried(not so many) was an old Woodwind, presumably made on a Chedeville blank. The Zinner ones sound good but the ones I've had(3 or 4) seemed to be a little high in pitch. Good Luck!

I recently bought a Fobes San Fran and love it. It cleared the throat tones out that i was having problems with on my Vandoren and gave me alot more control particularly upper register .. i dont have to overblow to get the notes to sound. I tried 3 different Fobes and one was noticably different than the other two. I had a fellow clarinet player listen and check pitch with a tuner and he was even suprised at the difference its made in my sound.

Perhaps this is due to another component of your clarinet. This is a highly unusual occurance with that blank - especially if played with a compatible standard barrel.
