Yes, it does look quite nice, doesn't it !

That said, & since Rossi Clarinets can be ordered in any of 7 different bore designs (6 of which might NOT fit your given style of playing or approach), I would go easy on the optimism. For a collector, this certainly MAY be an real opportunity. However, for a serious student or a professional playing in different parts of the world, we've got to balance apples to apples.

I am always VERY curious when a Clarinet of this high a magnitude appears on the market --- I am also @ times a skeptic of the reasons for the "cast off". In this regard, we seem to NOT have any problem with this instrument's background ....

best.

I agree...it's always good to know why someone is selling something (I'm selling my Infinite to fund my wood flute....). I'd be pretty confident in buying this, since they're selling it cuz the owner's dead and all :) Seems like a good reason to me! :) Anywho, I'd buy it if I could, but I'm *sure* someone is gonna snatch this up...it's sooo beautiful. I've never seen one like this, complete with case and fifty million barrels...I'm still kvelling over it :) *sigh* Someday...

On a slightly related note, has anyone seen that rosewood (I assume) Conn that's up for sale? It's like, 300 bucks...and it's SOO beautiful...i was contemplating it...what do you guys think?

I think that Conn is the laminated one - it's a laminate that looks gorgeous, but most of them have failed (delaminated).

That's the same seller that has the clear Buffet out there. Just a little FYI for whatever it's worth.

I believe that it's also the same seller of the 1994 FB Buffet that was on Ebay a few weeks ago. It sounds like the disposition of an estate.

As Mark says, that is one of Conn's that is made from laminated wood billets. It's NOT rosewood. The red coloring is from a wood stain. Conn was attempting to make a cheap, sturdy, student clarinet that would not crack. They had a defect in the laminating process and too many of them came apart (delaminated). Conn discontinued this type of production. However, those still around are the ones that did not delaminate and might be immune to that flaw.

The Pan American model (which this is) was Conn's bottom of the line student horn. They had a big sound but tuning was terrible, construction was cheap, and the keys clunky.

People buy these red ones for their beauty not to play. The highest I've seen one go for one eBay (if in perfect condition) is about $300 so this guy is starting out with his minimum bid too high.

I really don't know where this guy is getting his clarinets: both the tranparent Buffet R12 and this Rossi. But at his minimum bids, he knows, a little to well I think, what he is selling. What did he say about the Rossi, "the original owner died." Remember in Germany they don't play the Boehm system. Which means he is travelling far and wide to get these rare clarinets. Which means someone is going to have to pay for his efforts. His asking price is in dollars; which means he is really making a killing because of the exchange rate. As a general rule I use Ebay as a bargan hunting place. If I really wanted a Rossi I would contact him in Chile and have him make me to my personal specifications rather than risking the kind of dough this fellow wants.

The Rossi really is beautiful. Too bad the seller didn't show a picture of the underside. It looks like the register key vents on the side. Anyway, something seems to extend above the G# key in the throat.

Vis the Conn, I agree with everything Dee said. I bought one on eBay for a lot less than $300. No cracks, but a very minor & harmless chip in one tenon. Conn used little tiny locking screws to hold in the pivot screws. Someone on Sneezy once said that was because they pivot screws were not made well enough to stay in by themselves. There is nothing first class about the keywork. HOWEVER, it is a really georgous clarinet. Not Rossi georgous, but pretty enough that you have to show how, from the right angle, it really does look laminated. From any other angle you would swear it was some sort of exotic wood.
