Is anyone familiar with this mouthpiece? A friend of mine just got one for her clarinet and it sounds good, but I'm just wondering. How does it compare to the different Vandoren models? We were told that new, they would run about $80, but she got it for $20 (this was the same place I got my Yamaha YCL-72 for $450). Was it a good value?

Make that a Claude Lakey mp. And it's for the Bb clarinet. I should also add that this friend is a brand new clarinetist, using a Bundy student clarinet. And this mouthpiece has nearly eliminated her squeaking

I'd say anything that eliminates squeaking with a brand new clarinetist is worth its weight in gold. If it works, it works. When she progresses she may want a different mouthpiece as well as a better instrument. But, heh! I started on a Bundy with the stock mouthpiece and 40 years later am still playing. I only squeak on occasion.

correct, some very open. stick to the vandoren's. IMO, the teachers are dealing with a moving target when the setup changes greatly. when they hear a squeak they can probably fix the problem if they know the terrain. mw

Actually, if she could move up to the Vandoren, as mentioned above, it would be great. The orchestra and band directors here recommend the M13Lyre, 5RVLyre and the B45. In fact, they don't even let their students come to into the band/orchestra program without one of those three mouthpieces.

My friend is a 30 something beginner. She's just learning to play for fun and personal entertainment. Someday, she and I might try out for a community orchestra, but neither of us are at that point now. So we're really not concerned, at this point anyway, about a band director/student relationship; we were trying to get past the problem of her not being able to play anything without squeaking (she was getting frusterated to the point of not playing)
But since you all made the suggestions, when she is more in tune with the clarinet (no pun intended) and more sure she's going to continue, I will discuss with her about upgrading her mouthpiece. If she does stick with it, she will probably eventually want to graduate to a whole new set up anyway.
She does like jazz too, it's always possible she'll go that route with her playing. Then this mp would do well for her, right?
